HUNDREDS of people have viewed plans for a proposed motorway link road – which is claimed could reduce traffic in Bury.

Russell Homes is proposing to build a new link road between Junction 19 of the M62 and Hareshill Road and Pilsworth Road in the south Heywood employment area.

Cllr Paul Adams believes the road would help reduce traffic in Bury, as heavy goods vehicles use Pilsworth Road, Croft Lane and Hollins Brow as a cut-through route to Manchester Road, despite weight restrictions of 7.5 tonnes per truck, on all three roads.

More than 200 people turned out to view plans for the proposed road at a public exhibition in south Heywood.

Cllr Adams believes the extra link road would reduce the amount of lorries using the restricted roads to access the M66.

Daniel Kershaw, director at Russell Homes, said: “The public exhibitions we held recently were intended to provide local residents and businesses with the chance to view and comment on our initial thoughts for new development at south Heywood, including a new link road from Junction 19 of the M62.

“Over the course of the two days, approximately 200 people stopped by to view the plans, with many providing useful feedback.

“Subject to planning, these proposals would be a major investment in south Heywood, creating thousands of new jobs and providing much-needed housing and commercial units for the borough.

“Significantly, the proposed link road would help existing and future businesses to grow and prosper locally.

“The initial public exhibitions were the first of a two-part engagement exercise, with a second round of events scheduled to take place in September, ahead of a planning application being submitted. We will keep local people updated on the project, including details of the proposed future public exhibitions.”
