Armed response unit called after Bury man drops gun on tram

A BURY man was caught at Media City in Salford with a ball-bearing gun.

Daniel Bennett, aged 32, of Rochdale Road, was caught with the weapon and cannabis on December 13 last year and was arrested by police.

Bennett admitted weapon and drugs possession charges to Salford magistrates and was given a six-week prison sentence, suspended for a year, and ordered to do 70 hours of unpaid work.

He must also pay £165 court costs.

Magistrates said the offences were serious because they were committed in a busy place and while Bennett was subject to a conditional discharge at the time.

Fine for failing to co-operate

A MAN who failed to give police a specimen has been fined.

Waqaas Amjad, aged 28, was found guilty at Bury Magistrates' Court for failing to give a specimen of blood to police in the course of an investigation over a potential motoring offence.

He also pleaded guilty to failing to surrender to bail.

Amjad, of Parkhills Road, was fined £325, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £32 and costs of £225 to the Crown Prosecution Service.

He also had 10 points put on his licence.

Prison sentence for man who harassed woman

A MAN has been sent to prison for harassment.

Ian Atkinson, aged 48, of Hudson Close, pleaded guilty to harassing a woman in Bury between July 7 and July 17.

He was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison at Bury Magistrates' Court.

Community order for growing cannabis

A BURY man has been given a community order for growing cannabis.

Alex Bailey, aged 25, pleaded guilty at Bury Magistrates' Court to growing 11 plants of the class B drug.

A community order was made where he must attend a rehabilitation activity.

The Manchester Road resident was also ordered to carry out 120 hours unpaid work.

A victim surcharge of £85 was imposed and costs of £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service.

The cannabis was destroyed.

Prison sentence for assault

A MAN has been sent to prison for assault and damaging property.

Steven Conway, aged 23, was found guilty after trial at Bury Magistrates' Court of assaulting Andrew Gold by beating him in Ramsbottom on February 6.

The St Andrews Close, Ramsbottom, resident pleaded guilty to causing £100 worth of damage to a picture belonging to the same man.

The offences were committed while the defendant was under a suspended sentence for driving a car whilst under the influence of alcohol and causing an accident and failing to stop.

He was sent to prison for 26 weeks.

Man disqualified for driving under the influence

A MAN who drove in Bury whilst under the influence of alcohol has been disqualified and fined.

Radek Grajcar, aged 29, pleaded guilty at Bury Magistrates' Court to driving a Fiat Brava in York Street having drank alcohol.

He recorded 63 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath where the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

The Eton Hill Road, Radcliffe, resident also pleaded guilty to driving without an appropriate licence and without insurance.

He was disqualified for 18 months and fined £550.

He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service and victim surcharge of £45.

Man sent indecent photograph

A MAN has been given a suspended sentence for disclosing a private sexual picture.

Barry Gray, aged 34, pleaded guilty to disclosing a private sexual picture with the intention to cause distress in Bury on May 16.

He also pleaded guilty at Bury Magistrates' Court to causing damage to the same victim's window in Bury on June 12.

The final charge he pleaded guilty to was pursuing a course of conduct which amounted to the harassment of the same victim between May 4 and June 15. He was committed to prison for 16 weeks suspended for two years.

Gray of Downing Close, Wigan, must also comply with a two year supervision order and take part with a rehabilitation activity requirement.

A restraining order was made where he must not contact the victim.

He also has to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work and pay £300 compensation, a victim surcharge of £115 and costs of £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Man sent to prison for assault

A BURY man has been sent to prison for assaulting a woman.

Philip Herdson, aged 39, of Sawyer Street was jailed for 12 weeks at Bury Magistrates' Court.

A restraining order was also made.

Man jailed for stealing women's handbags

A MAN who stole four women's handbags in Bury has been jailed.

Alan Kelsall, aged 42, pleaded guilty to stealing the handbags in Bury on July 6.

Kelsall, of no fixed address, was sent to prison for eight months because the offence was so serious due to the emotional distress to the victims.

He was also ordered to pay compensation of £200.

Community order for assault

A BURY man has been given a community order after pleading guilty to assault.

Alan Keown, 54, pleaded guilty at Bury Magistrates' Court to assaulting Dominic Doyle and Jordan Dalzell by beating them in Bury on June 16.

The Radcliffe Road resident must comply with the requirements of a rehabilitation activity.

He was also fined £40, ordered to pay £100 compensation, a victim surcharge of £85 and costs of £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Fine for damaging bookmakers window

A MAN has been fined for damaging the window of Coral bookmakers in Bury.

Graham Madeley, aged 43, pleaded guilty at Bury Magistrates' Court to causing £500 worth of damage to the glass window on June 16.

He was fined £385 and ordered to pay £500 compensation.

The Parkside Mews, Whitefield, resident must also pay £38 victim surcharge and £85 costs to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Conditional discharge for possession of drugs

A MAN has been given a conditional discharge for possession of cannabis.

George McKenna, aged 23, was given a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £15 victim surcharge.

He pleaded guilty to having the class b drug on his possession in Bury on February 9.

Community order for disqualified driver

A WOMAN who drove whilst disqualified has been given a community order.

Rachel Roberts, aged 26, pleaded guilty at Bury Magistrates' Court to driving a Renault Scenic in Rochdale on March 18 while disqualified.

The Badger Street, Bury, resident also pleaded guilty to obstructing a police officer in the execution of his duty on the same date.

She will now be electronically tagged for five weeks and be under a curfew from 7pm until 7am.

Roberts was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £60 and costs of £320 to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Bury man sent to prison for assault

A BURY man has been jailed for beating up a woman.

Jason Shaw, aged 38, pleaded guilty at Bury Magistrates' Court to assaulting a woman by beating her in Bury on April 11.

He also pleaded guilty to stealing meat to the value of £120 from the Co-op in Bury on April 11.

Shaw, of Eldon Street, also pleaded guilty to interfering with a Vauxhall Corsa in Bury on May 27.

The final charge he pleaded guilty to was assaulting Martin Cameron by beating him on May 27.

He was sent to prison for 12 weeks because the offences were so serious and because of his previous record for violence, dishonesty and repeat offending. Shaw was also ordered to pay compensation of £270.

Man sent to prison for stealing food

A MAN who stole food from Tesco and Asda in Bury has been sent to prison.

Billy Ward, aged 31, was sentenced to 11 weeks in prison for the two offences and for failing to answer his bail.

Ward, of Delaunays Road, Manchester, pleaded guilty to stealing food worth £125.03 from Tesco on May 9 and food worth £226.81 from Asda on July 16, at Bury Magistrates' Court.

He was sent to prison because he has a record of non-compliance with community orders and the offences were committed whilst subject to another community order.

Ward was also ordered to pay £115 victim surcharge.

Conditional discharge for assault

A BURY woman has been given a conditional discharge for assaulting a man.

Maria White, aged 67, was found guilty at Bury Magistrates' Court of assaulting a man by beating him in Bury on January 7.

The Millwood Court resident was given a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £50 compensation.

She must also pay £15 victim surcharge and costs of £300 to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Jail warning for offender

A MAN who twice drove while disqualified has been warned he could go to prison if he reoffends.

Matthew Morrison, aged 30, of Polefield Hall Road, Prestwich, drove a Seat Ibiza in Chatford Close, Salford, on March 13 while disqualified and without insurance.

In committing those offences, Morrison was breaching a community order which was set after he drove a Vauxhall Astra in Simister Lane, Prestwich, while disqualified on September 10 last year.

Morrison admitted two motoring offences to Salford magistrates and was given a 24-week prison sentence suspended for 18 months.

Damage to property

ROY Thompson, aged 45, of Viking Close, Prestwich, admitted to Salford magistrates that he smashed a window at a property in Manchester belonging to Great Places Housing Association on July 2 and the damage cost £100 to set right.

Thompson was ordered to pay for the damage and pay £321 in fines and court costs.

Woman guilty of assault

A WOMAN has been given a 12-month conditional charge after being convicted of assault.

Leanne Massey, aged 25, of Polefield Hall Road, Prestwich, denied assaulting the woman in Bury on Christmas Eve but was found guilty at Bury Magistrates' Court.

She must also pay her victim £100 compensation and £165 court costs.

Community order for assault

A Radcliffe man has been given a community order for assaulting a woman.

Peter Birchall, 36, pleaded guilty at Bury Magistrates' Court to the assault in Bury on May 30.

The Coronation Road resident also pleaded guilty to damaging a CCTV monitor to the value of £880 belonging to Sophie's Cafe in Blackburn Street.

A community order was made where he must carry out 50 hours unpaid work.

He was also ordered to pay £980 compensation.

Community order for theft

A RADCLIFFE man has been given a community order for three offences of theft.

Jonathan Evans, 39, pleaded guilty to stealing beard trimmers from Wilkinsons in Bury on July 11.

The Mayfair Avenue resident also pleaded guilty to stealing ladies curling tongs from the same shop on July 12 and razor blades from B&M Bargains in Bury on July 14.

The total amount of the stolen goods came to £392.

Evans was given a community order where he was given an electronic tag to wear for four weeks and he must stay at his home address between 7am and 7pm.

He also had to pay a total of £355 compensation.

Motorist is sentenced

JUBRIL Ayoola, aged 45, of Farwood Crescent, Radcliffe, drove a Peugeot 206 on the M67 in Tameside on December 22 last year without a licence.

The charge was proved under the single justice procedure at Salford Magistrates' Court and Ayoola was given three penalty points and ordered to pay £327 in fines and court costs.

Man told to pay for PC assault

A RADCLIFFE man has been told to pay a police officer he attacked £50 compensation.

Nicholas McGuire, aged 27, of Walter Lane Street, admitted to Bury magistrates that he assaulted the PC in Bury on July 12 and also admitted breach of the peace.

McGuire was also ordered to pay £375 in fines and court costs.

Bound over for breach

NICHOLAS McGuire, aged 27, of Water Lane Street, Radcliffe, admitted to Bury magistrates that he breached the peace in Radcliffe on July 13 by contacting a woman and was bound over in the sum of £200 for 12 months.

BMW driver’s speed guilt

MARK Wilson, aged 41, of Burghley Drive, Radcliffe, has been convicted of driving a BMW at 41mph in a 30mph zone in Bolton Street, Bury, on December 13 last year.

He was given four penalty points and ordered to pay £569 in fines and court costs.
