BURY Athletic Club's runners hit the road in a busy weekend of competition.

The North of England Road Relay Championships took place at Sportscity on Sunday and Bury's under-15s boys produced the club's best finish of the day, taking 13th place.

Francis Woodcock brought the team home in 15th on the first leg (9mins 47secs), handing over to Oliver Donnelly who ran very well to push the team up to 13th (10:20).

Stefan Kalambouka ran the final leg and held on to the position with a 10:07 leg.

The u15s girls finished 19th, with Charlotte Speakman-Farnworth (11:20), Daisy Worthington (11:16) and Heledd Rimmer (11:56) all producing good runs.

In the u13s races the boys and girls team both took very creditable 16th places.

For the boys, Elliott Savage ran a strong first leg (10:29) handing over to Gilbert Vaughan, who ran 11:44, before Evan Savage brought the team home with a 10:43 leg.

Freya Potts kicked off the girls' race with a leg of 11:23, followed by and Grace Gibson (12:08) and Erin Kenyon (11:57), who brought the team home in 16th place.

Bury fielded two teams in the senior women’s race. For the A team, Sophie Whittaker was first away bringing the team home in 38th place with a leg of 19:54. Katie Geelan moved the team up to 33rd with 19:37 before handing over to Jenny Yates, whose time of 21.05 moved them up to 28th.

The last leg was run by Katie Buckley, who produced Bury’s fastest run of the day with 18:25, which saw them finish 21st.

For the B team, there were solid runs from Lauren Booth (21:15), Lucy Hodson (22:56), Nicola Brown (26:02) and Lizzie Cheshire (23:35), who secured 54th place.

Ben Coop also ran strongly in the Rochdale Half Marathon to take third place overall and second in the open age category.

His time of 1:18:01 was an impressive debut over the distance on an undulating course.

Bury’s athletes now prepare themselves for the transition from track and road to cross country. The first of the Red Rose Cross Country League races takes place in Leigh on October 15.
