RUNNERS took part in a charity challenge with a difference as they tackled Holcombe Hill.

The ‘Run the Hill’ race, won by Rob Makin in a time of just over 24 minutes, has raised over £2,000 for Bury Cancer Support Centre.

Jeff Green, organiser of the 5km event and chairman of the trustees for the centre in Bolton Road, said: “It was a good turnout on a challenging muddy course – thanks to everyone who supported the day.”

The 36 competitors started the route in Holcombe Village near the Shoulder of Mutton pub in Lumb Carr Road and traversed the hill before finishing at Peel Tower.

There was a separate 2km ‘fun run’ for children and families on flatter ground at the top of the hill after the main event.

Sue Hyland, a volunteer for the charity, said: “It was a fantastic day and it’s wonderful to have raised so much. People are extremely generous. It is a very difficult course, especially in the conditions, so congratulations to all the runners. They were puffed out when they reached the top.”

“We involve all the local running clubs and then a lot of the runners tend to be supporters of the charity and those who know people who have been helped by the centre.

It was the second consecutive year that the race had been run, and organisers hope it will continue to be an annual event.
