A DOUBLE from Lorna Wroe and decisive penalty flick from Emma Brown helped cap another successful weekend for Bury Hockey Club.

League victories for the in-form men's second team and ladies' first team on Saturday were followed by a dramatic win for the ladies' seconds at Oldham in the All Division's Cup on Sunday.

The second team, who are second bottom in Division Two of the Greater Manchester Women's League, had looked set for victory at home to third-placed Stockport Bramhall thirds in the league on Saturday when a goal from Wroe put them into a first-half lead.

They suffered heartbreak after conceding two late goals to lose 2-1 but bounced back from the disappointment the following day to beat Oldham 3-2 on penalty flicks after their cup tie had ended 2-2.

After starting with a one-goal deficit, as per competition rules, Wroe levelled the scores early in the second half, only for Oldham to edge back in front.

Wroe equalised again with her fifth goal in four games to send the tie to penalties, and after Beard and Wroe converted their attempts and keeper Hania Nicholson pulled off a string of saves to open the door for Bury, defender Brown stepped up to settle the tie.

The ladies' first team, who are second in Division Two, continue to put pressure on leaders Prescot seconds following a 1-0 win at the University of Salford.

A Jo Miller strike from a short corner was enough to seal the three points, keeping Bury just one point behind Prescot.

The men's first team were unable to make it three straight wins after losing 2-0 at Didsbury Northern thirds – the early leaders of Division Three North in the North West Men's Hockey League.

There were no such problems for the men's second team, who moved into second place in the Division Six North South with a 10-5 win at home to Urmston thirds.

Goals from Andy Foster, Adam Johnson and Ellis Attewell put Bury 3-0 up before Urmston pulled one back.

Two further strikes from Matt Cooke and Johnson again saw Bury hit five before half time, with Urmston grabbing a second from a short corner.

The second half saw skipper Johnson claim his second consecutive hat-trick, with Cooke and Attewell grabbing their second goals before a Rob Fogwill brace rounded off the scoring for the home side.

Although exposed at the back, Urmston did offer a threat going forward and were able to claim three more goals before the end.
