GHOULS and ghosts got into the Halloween spirit – and took on a challenge with a difference.

More than 200 people donned their finest scary costumes at Burrs Country Park on Saturday when they tackled a tricky 6km course, complete with action-packed obstacles and lashings of mud.

The Muddy Maniacs event encouraged runners to dress in funky Halloween costumes and scale obstacles, such as a daunting staircase hay bales, a slippery water slide and a gruelling crawl net.

In all there were 30 obstacles — and participants had to complete two full circuits in fancy dress.

Skeletons, zombie nurses and Walking Dead prisoners were among those who took part, and runners, who took part either alone or as part of a team, gave the event the thumbs up.

Rach-Lou Bickers, of Bury, said: "I had such an amazing time. It was my first Muddy Maniacs race and it certainly won't be the last.

"The organisation from start to finish was amazing and the staff and volunteers were friendly and helpful.

"A massive thanks to everyone who played a part and, equally, to those who took the time to dress up. I can't wait for next year."

An event spokesman said: "The race proved to be a huge success and we hope everyone enjoyed it.

"We have some awesome changes in store for 2017, including a new extended 10km route for people who want the extra mileage and, of course, even more obstacles and inflatables.

"Thanks for making 2016 such an incredible year.

"We've enjoyed making you guys scream, cry, laugh and smile and we look forward to seeing you all again in the near future."
