A SECURITY guard carrying a cash box was robbed in broad daylight outside a busy supermarket.

Shoppers looked on in horror as the robber punched the cash delivery man in the jaw and knocked him to the floor at Lidl in Victoria Retail Park, Victoria Street.

The man snatched the money box, before he and his accomplice fled the scene at speed on a motorbike.

A witness said: “I was a bit shaken up, to be honest You don’t really expect to see something like that when you just go out shopping on a Saturday morning, especially in broad daylight and there were quite a few shoppers around.”

The witness said he pulled up in his car next to the robbers in the supermarket’s car park but didn’t notice anything suspicious before the incident happened.

He said: “The motorbike’s engine was running and they were both wearing balaclavas, but it was cold so I didn’t really think much of it.

“But in hindsight the two guys were quite obviously watching the guards in the store.”

The witness said one of the men then got off the bike and walked towards the security guard who was carrying the cash box back to a van.

He didn’t clearly see what happened next because the van was blocking his view, but the witness said he saw the guard fall to the floor before the two assailants ran back to the motorbike.
The two darkly-dressed men escaped on the motorbike past National Tyres and Autocare, in Bolton Road, in the direction of Bury town centre.

The robbery happened between 11.45am and 11:48am on Saturday, November 5, and police were called shortly afterwards.

The motorbike the men fled on was described by witnesses as a dark-blue high-performance bike.

One of the men was described as six feet tall, of stocky build, wearing dark clothing, dark sunglasses and a black motorcycle helmet.

The other man was described as wearing dark clothing and a dark motorcycle helmet.

A spokesman for Lidl said the business was assisting Greater Manchester Police with their enquiries.

Police have confirmed they have launched an investigation and asked anyone with information to contact them – quoting incident number 943 of November 5 – on 101 or the independent charity, Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
