A DEBT collector turned playwright is preparing to see his debut script brought to life on stage.

Steve Hutchinson, from Radcliffe, decided to try his hand at writing a play, despite having no previous experience, after being inspired by the colourful characters he has met through his work.

The 52-year-old, who is also a window cleaner by day, penned his kitchen sink drama, Nowhere 1992, this year and it will now be performed in Salford in the run-up to Christmas.

Mr Hutchinson, of Kilburn Road, said: "I have never written a play before and have no writing experience at all, but I work part-time as a debt collector so have used my experiences from that to come up with this story.

"I have had loads of really good feedback on it so far, which is amazing considering it hasn't even been performed yet.

"The characters are based on the kinds of people I have through my job and it is set in the music scene of the early 90s, the time of Oasis and Blur."

After seeing his daughter, Danielle, aged 25, in a performance of Blood Brothers last Christmas, Mr Hutchinson decided to put his own story-telling skills to the test by penning his own play.

And his efforts have proved so successful that a theatre in London has now also expressed an interest the play, which follows the lives of two siblings as their lives spiral out of control after their mother's death.

He added: "I joked with Danielle that I had met so many characters in my life that I could probably write something just as good as Blood Brothers, if not better.

"I don't think she took much notice of it at the time but I pressed ahead with it.

"It to about six or seven months for me to finish writing it and there have been a few alterations since then.

"I showed Danielle what I had done and she took it into the Manchester Acting School, where she goes, and they were impressed.

"For me, the scenes are really quite gripping but there is also a lot of humour in there, it is very tongue-in-cheek.

"Now I'm really excited to see it performed on stage."

The play is being performed at the King's Arms, which is owned by Housemartins and Beautiful South singer Paul Heaton, from December 20 to 22.
