CHRISTMAS has officially arrived in Affetside as Father Christmas paid a visit to turn on the lights.

Crowds turned up at the tree for the big switch on as Santa was joined by two elves for the festivities.

After turning on the lights Santa turned his hand to giving out special gifts to the children who had attended.

The event was put on by the Affetside Society and Millennium Green Trust and a spokesman for the group said that the event was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

They said: “I think Santa brought some of the North Pole’s wind and chill with him, but the smiles managed to warm up the evening.”

The group’s final event of the year is being held on Sunday December 18.

Tottington Brass Band will be hosting carols around the Christmas tree.

The singing will be followed by free mulled wine and mince pies.

Organisers are asking for people to bring along mince pies to share.

That is not the only local Christmas event happening over the weekend of December 17 and 18.

In Ramsbottom there is a street market in Bridge Street over the weekend where children can meet Father Christmas.

Also on Sunday 18 there is a festive food and craft market at the Market Place and in Ramsbottom Civic Hall.

There will also be an ice skating rink open on December 16,17 and 18.
