THOUSANDS of Bury households will be hit by a cut to the borough’s council tax support scheme.
Bury Council has approved plans to slash the maximum amount of support it hands out by 20 per cent, due to a large cut in Government funding.
A total of 9,465 households will be affected by the move, according to a report approved at last week’s council meeting.
The proposal, which will come into effect from April 2017, will also include restrictions on the amount of tax credits awarded to families who have a third or subsequent child after that date.
The report says: “Given the fixed nature of the government grant to fund the scheme, the risk continues that increased take up or reductions to the income of existing claimants will have a direct impact on local authorities. It is now necessary to revise the scheme to reflect future cost forecasts.”
Presenting the report to members at the town hall meeting on Wednesday, Cllr Sandra Walmsley said that the cut was an unfortunate but necessary action.
