ORGANISERS of the Radcliffe Athletics Club 10k are urging runners to show their support once again this year for the multi-terrain race.

The race, which saw record numbers take part last year with over 350 competitors overall, will take place on April 9.

The picturesque route starts and finishes at the track in Cams Lane Primary School, taking in part of the Outwood Trail and along part of the Bury and Bolton train line, including the former Ringley Road station.

It then returns to Cams Lane along the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal via Nob End, a series of locks long derelict but with plans to be revived.

Luigi Salzano, co-race director, said that it is important to keep raising the profile of the event.

“The race is now a regular fixture in the calendar and attracts runners from all over Greater Manchester,” he said.

“Runners love it for the blend of trail and canal side running.

“Last year’s entry was a record and we are hoping to top that this year.”

He added that there will be a small change in the usual route this time around.

“The race has been around for a few years now but we have slightly tweaked the route this time to allow us to have chip timing.”

Last year also saw a best ever time for the course, with Horwich RMI Harriers runner Michael Clayton coming home in 33mins 16secs, beating the previous record by seven seconds.

The Cams Lane track is now associated with Radcliffe’s own Olympian, Nellie Halstead.

A member of both Bury and Radcliffe Athletics Clubs, Nellie broke the world record for the 220 yards and 440 yards sprint in the 1930s.

In 1932 she won her Olympic medal in the British 4x100 yard relay and was described at the time as one of Britain’s greatest woman athletes.

The race costs £10 to enter on the day or £8 for members of running clubs.

People can pre-register online at for £1 cheaper.

A cake sale will be taking place at the end of the race with all proceeds going to the Maritime Volunteer Service.
