THE latest exercise trend is proving to be a huge hit with mums — and their babies.

Together new mothers and their tots work out every week at the Fit Mamas Class run by Vikki Owen.

The popular class was set up by qualified fitness instructor Vikki, from Bury, after her daughter Amelie was born and she realised it was more difficult for mums to exercise.

But Mrs Owen said that the classes at Bolton St Catherine's Academy in Harwood were more than just workout sessions.

She said: "The classes are good for children’s social development because they meet other children and for the mums it is a social occasion for them.

"Many mums can feel isolated after having a baby and here they get to meet other mums and know they are feeling the same. Many of the members are now best friends and are arranging nights out together!

She added: "I have seen mums drop off their children in the school and come into the class."

During the class the children are able to play together in the gym while their mums work out. And some little ones even join their mothers to provide that extra bit of encouragement – and laughs.

Mrs Owen said: "Children are following their mums’ example and are being introduced to fitness at a young age. The classes are held on the dance floor and the school is supportive because it is a service for the community."

Mrs Owen is now looking for other venues to expand the classes to other areas. She said: “I am able to keep prices low and affordable but if the venue is expensive it will mean I will have to raise the prices, which I don’t want to do.”
