IT MIGHT sound like a rubbish present but Louise Daveron was delighted when her husband bought her a bin.

Paul Snelson and Ms Daveron are both passionate about litter collecting and it proved the ideal gift.

And it has now been donated to the community.

The Hollins Conservation Group members installed their bin at the junction of Croft Lane and Hollins Lane in Hollins Village.

Since the installation, four other residents including the Hollins Bush pub have sponsored another four bins in the area.

Mr Snelson said: “I asked Louise what she would like for Christmas and she said we could do with a litter bin on Croft Lane. I made some enquiries and the council agreed to empty the bin if I bought it, so I ordered Louise’s new shiny, green litter bin.”

Mrs Daveron added: “If people want to see more bins and would be happy to sponsor one, it costs £70 and can help keep the streets clean. Since we’ve been back around Croft Lane litter picking, it’s clear to see that people are using it.”

At a recent meeting of the Whitefield and Unsworth Township Forum, Anthony Scott-Norman from the York Street Home Watch group, asked if people could purchase their own bins as Bury Council no longer has the funds to do so. Peter Burns, senior supervisor at the council said: “It’s a fantastic idea. Once installed, we empty the bins on a regular basis or when needed.”
