A COMMUNITY cafe which helps people who are living with dementia has been nominated for an award.

‘D-CaFF’ café, run by Greenmount Village Community, is in the running to pick up a Made in Bury award. The accolade recognises the good work of residents and community groups throughout the Bury borough.

The D-CaFF café project started in May 2016 and is held at Greenmount Cricket Club on the second Friday of every month from 1.15pm to 3.15pm. It is open to everyone in the community.

At each session there are organised activities aimed at helping people who are living with dementia, as well as support for their carers.

To help get the project started the group applied to Ramsbottom, Tottington and North Manor Township Forum for a grant.

Alistair Waddell, chairman of the Greenmount Village Community group, said: “We were fortunate to be granted £400 back in June to help us get this project off the ground.

“Not one of us expected the D-CaFF project to be so successful, not even in our wildest dreams.

“Our events regularly have more than 80 people attending, and the feedback we are getting is beyond our expectations.

“It has been a wonderful journey.”

In November 2016 the project was nominated in the National Alzheimer’s Society Awards at Church House, Westminster, where it came runner-up in the ‘rural’ category.

Now, the D-CaFF has again been nominated for an award much nearer to home with Made in Bury.

Mr Waddell added: “We are asking for people to support us and vote for the D-CaFF in these local awards?

“And, if anyone has not been along to a D-CaFF yet, may I suggest they come along.

“It has a real community buzz about it.”

The next café will be on Friday, April 14 from 1.15pm to 3.15pm at Greenmount Cricket Club, in Brandlesholme Road. Everyone is welcome.
