A SCOUT group has won a grant from a supermarket which will help pay for new equipment.

The 52nd Bury and Ramsbottom (1st Unsworth) Scout group – based in Hollins, Unsworth – has won first prize in the Asda Foundation’s green token scheme.

The group, which has gone through a leadership change in the last 12 months, is now the fastest growing group in the Bury & Ramsbottom District.

The group was able to utilise its network of parents, Scouts and community contacts to beat other causes for the £500 grant.

With one of the youngest leadership and executive teams in the Greater Manchester Area, the group regularly take part in camping trips, activity days out and outdoor learning that teach young people skills they will be able to use for the rest of their lives.

Group scout leader, Michael Hope, said: “This grant will allow the group to reinvest in camping equipment and learning tools; improving the Scout’s experience.

“We are always on the lookout for new grants for the group.

“We’ve already got planned trips to Jodrell Bank Observatory, Manchester Airport Visitor Centre and the new Bury Fire Station Learning Centre.

“Continued investment will let us create further exciting opportunities for all sections in the group.”

Using a £150 grant from the Scout Association the group was able to open a new ‘explorer unit’ allowing Scouts aged 14 to 18 to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Award and young leader belt which includes opportunities to sail, kayak, climb and much more.

With the exciting activities it has planned over the next 12 months, the group is hoping to expand all sections.
