BURY Amateur Boxing Club may close if owner and trainer Mick Jelley cannot relocate it.

Mr Jelley has seen the club enter a golden era and has trained the likes of Amir Khan and former world super-bantamweight champion Scott Quigg.

Bury ABC has an 80 year history being passed from father to son and is currently in Seedfield Community Centre.

The centre is due to close as it is "no longer fit for purpose".

Mr Jelley said: "Without the club, I am sure some of the lads will have been lost to society, or at least become a drain on it, rather than going on to make something of their lives.

"I just fear the lifeline Bury ABC gives to many members of the community could be lost forever, and that's what worries me most."

A spokesman for Bury Council said: "Seedfield was used for a number of council services, but the centre is no longer fit for purpose.

"We have been withdrawing services and relocating staff from Seedfield for a number of years; very few are still there, and will be withdrawn by August.

"We are looking at alternative uses for the site, but no decisions have yet been made.

"The site has also been used, rent-free, by Seedfield Sports Club (who use the sports pitches) and Bury Boxing Club.

"We have held several meetings with them to keep them up to date and to discuss the possibility of finding them alternative accommodation.

"In fact, we are due to meet them again tomorrow night.”
