A POTHOLE covered road used to take terminally ill patients to Bury Hospice has been described as “shocking” by a bereaved woman who is campaigning to get it fixed.

Joanne Hopkinson, aged 45, is appealing for help to trace the owners of an for information to find out who owns or has unadopted stretch of road leading to the in-patient entrance to the hospice.

The road leads from Forth Avenue to the car park at the back of the Rochdale Old Road hospice and was used by Mrs Hopkinson’s father, 74-year-old Jack Brooks, as he made his final journey there last month.

Mrs Hopkinson said: “The ambulance guys were fantastic but the road into the in-patient unit is an unadopted little stretch of road and it’s absolutely full of potholes. It’s terrible — shocking.

“Whilst they were transferring him they had to tell him to hang on and kept apologising.

“We were following it down in our car and I couldn’t believe the state of it.”

Mr Brooks died on March 15 but Mrs Hopkinson wants to make sure the road is repaired to spare others, who will have to use it in the future, an uncomfortable journey.

The road is not owned by the hospice and a council spokesman confirmed that it is unadopted and so is not the authority’s responsibility.

Mrs Hopkinson is appealing for help to turn her resurfacing plan into a reality and his leafleting residents on Forth Avenue asking for their support.

She said: “People don’t know about the situation and it’s so important to me to get this done.

“No one should have to go over that road.

“It’s about getting the road done for other people.”

Mrs Hopkinson has already been in touch with builders’ merchants Jewson, where manager Alan Smith has agreed to donate materials to help with the resurfacing and the B&Q store has also agreed to help.

Mrs Hopkinson has set up a JustGiving page in the hop of raising £2,000 towards the project and has received £130 so far in donations. Contributions can be made by visiting www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/joanne-hopkinson.
