BURY Green Party has announced it will not be fielding a candidate in either of the town's constituencies in June.

Instead of running, Bury Greens will be doing all they can, with their counterparts up and down the country to "build a strong anti-Tory movement" in the run up to the election on June 8.

Nicole Haydock, spokeswoman for the Bury Green Party, said: "Conscious of our responsibilities towards defending the poorest and most vulnerable members of our community under the deeply unfair first-past-the-post voting system, Bury Greens have made the decision not to stand a candidate in our two highly marginal seats for Bury North (Conservative MP David Nuttall) and Bury South (Labour MP Ivan Lewis) for the forthcoming General Election on June 8."

She added Theresa May's decision to trigger a snap election, contrary to her earlier promises of no election before 2020, showed "she cannot be trusted".

Mrs Haydock said: "She cannot be trusted on Brexit, on the economy, on taxation, our environment, tackling Climate Change and meeting social housing needs.

"She cannot be trusted to safeguard the most basic of public services such as libraries delivered by Local Councils.

"Her policies are clearly to dismantle and privatise the NHS and the provision of welfare.

"She also keeps ignoring the severity of the crisis in social care and education.

"By viciously attacking the disabled, cutting their allowances further still, imposing inhumane sanctions against job seekers, the prospect of four more years of Tory rule is simply too frightening to contemplate."

So far Labour, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats have put forward candidates for the Bury constituencies.

Labour's Ivan Lewis, Bury South, and Tory David Nuttall, Bury North, will be defending their seats.

Robert Largan and Andrew Page will be contesting the Bury South seat for the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats respectively.

While Labour's James Frith and Lib Dem Richard Baum are standing in Bury North.
