A SCHOOLBOY is celebrating after finishing second in a top chess competition.
Luke Prescott, a Year Six pupil at Our Lady of Grace RC Primary School in Prestwich, began playing chess on the school’s team in September.
In a recent school chess competition, he managed to score 19 points and qualified for the local inter school competition, known as the Megafinal.
The contest took place at Saddleworth High School, in Uppermill, Oldham, and after a number of intense matches, Luke finished second.
He has now qualified for the regional Gigafinal, which will be held in June, where he will compete for a place in the national Terafinal, for a chance to win £2,000.
Tom Collins, deputy headteacher at the school in Willow Road, said: “Luke’s development as a chess player has been greatly supported at the school by the teacher in charge of chess, John Cihlar, who has taught children chess in his Thursday dinner break for many years.
“Well done Luke you are a credit to your family and your school.”
Mr Cihlar added: “His achievement in reaching the under11’s Gigafinal of the Delancey UK Schools Chess Challenge is well worth noting.
“He came second in the megafinal, losing only one game out of six in what was a gruelling day.
“This is a great achievement for Luke.”
