DIGNITARIES in Bury and throughout Greater Manchester expressed their shock and outrage following the attack.

Cllr Rishi Shori, leader of Bury Council, said: “On behalf of the people of Bury, I offer my deepest sympathies to all the families and friends of those who died in last night’s tragedy at Manchester Arena, and we pray that all those who were injured can make a speedy recovery.

“Manchester has been targeted by terrorism before, but the spirit and resilience of its people prevailed then, and will do again.

“The Union flags outside Bury Town Hall and Knowsley Place, now flying at half-mast, symbolise our belief in freedom, liberty and justice - eternal values that no one can destroy.

“I know that many of you will wish to share your feelings about this terrible attack. Therefore we have set up a Book of Condolence at the reception desk at the town hall.

“Residents can also sign the Manchester book of condolence online at https://secure.manchester.gov.uk/forms/form/1472/en/book_of_condolence_-_manchester

“We would like to echo Manchester’s tribute to Greater Manchester Police and the emergency services that rushed to help and support people at the Arena last night, and all those who worked with the emergency services to coordinate the response.

“While there is no specific intelligence of any further threats, can I ask that everyone remains vigilant and if you have any concerns report them in confidence to the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321.

“There is also an emergency number available for those who are concerned about love ones or anyone who may have been in the area last night – this is 0161 856 9400.

“We have offered Manchester City Council any support that they need and stand in solidarity with the people of Manchester at this difficult time.

“Support has also been put in place at local schools and for any local families who may have been affected.”

David Nuttall, Conservative candidate for the Bury North Parliamentary seat, said he was devastated.

He said: “My thoughts and prayers are for all those who had their lives cut short and for all their families and friends who will be mourning their loss.

“Let us also remember all those who are suffering from injuries and for all those who are caring for them.

“I am always conscious that even in the midst of a general election campaign what unites us all is much greater than the politics which divides us.

“This news puts everything into perspective.”

A planned protest outside Prestwich Walk-in Centre was among the political events cancelled after the attack.

Ivan Lewis, Labour candidate in Bury South, said it was an horrendous attack.

He said: “Due to the tragic events in Manchester last night we will be suspending all campaigning as a mark of respect, including the planned protest outside Prestwich Walk-in Centre that was due to take place at 1pm.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones and friends of those who have lost their lives and been injured in this horrendous attack.”

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, said: “After our darkest of nights, Manchester is waking up to the most difficult of dawns.

“It is hard to believe what has happened here in the last few hours and to put into words the shock, anger and hurt that we feel today.

“These were children, young people and their families that those responsible chose to terrorise and kill.

“This was an evil act.

“Our first thoughts are with the families of those killed and injured and we will do whatever we can to support them.

“We are grieving today but we are strong. Today it will be business as usual as far as possible in our great city.

“I want to thank the hundreds of police, fire, and ambulance staff who worked through the night in the most difficult circumstances imaginable.

“We have had messages of support from cities across the country and around the world and we thank them. But lastly I want to thank the people of Manchester.

“Even in the minutes after the attack, they opened their doors to strangers and drove them away from danger. They gave the best possible immediate response to those who seek to divide us.

“And it will be that spirit of Manchester that will prevail and hold us together.”
