ELTON Rifles and Bury Storm will attempt to make it into the Archway GMCL20 finals day tomorrow.

Both local sides face tough quarter-final ties, with Premier Division strugglers Bury travelling to league leaders Denton St Lawrence and Division Two outfit Elton hosting Denton West, of the top tier.

Walshaw Warriors had hoped to join them in the last eight, but fell 14 runs short at home to Bamford Bulldogs in their second-round match last Friday.

Only two of the Bamford batsmen made it into double figures, but Chris Schofield’s 64 in 48 balls and Mitchell Renwick’s 40 from 30 balls proved just enough to put them out of reach.

Joshua Rhodes was the pick of the Walshaw bowlers, taking 3-21, while Liam Riley and Joe Smith-Butler took two wickets apiece.

But for a nightmare start to their innings, which saw Walshaw reduced to 6-3 and then 66-6, they could well have chased down their target.

Jack McClung held up one end as wickets tumbled at the other, then put on 70 for the seventh wicket with Shabnan Ali (34 not out).

Both men finished unbeaten, with McClung hitting three sixes and nine boundaries in total in his 63, but they eventually ran out of overs.

Should Elton and Bury make it through, finals day is due to be held at Clifton on Sunday, July 30.
