MOST seven-year-old boys would ask for games, toys and chocolate for their birthday party – not Jacob Graham.
The Holly Mount Roman Catholic Primary School pupil instead asked for money for Bury Hospice, in memory of his grandma Sue Graham.
‘Granny Sue’, who worked at family firm potato suppliers Vic Graham Ltd, died in Bury Hospice from cancer aged 64 in October 2013 when Jacob was just three years old.
“I remember her reading me books and tickling my back,” said Jacob, who has a sister Martha, aged four.
Jacob became inspired to do something for Bury Hospice when two girls at his school decided to fundraise for them.
With his birthday in May, he chose to ask for money for the local charity.
“We were quite surprised,” said mum Emma Graham. “We had to make sure he understood he wouldn’t have many presents for his birthday party by doing this but he said he had enough toys and didn’t need any more."
Dad Mark Graham said: “He wanted to raise £150 so we were amazed when he raised £415.”
Bury Hospice fundraiser Michelle King added: “Jacob is an inspiration, everyone at Bury Hospice is so proud of him.”
Jacob now aims to do the Bury Hospice Touch the Rainbow 5km Colour Run next year so he can raise £1,000 altogether for Bury Hospice and secure a heart on the wall in reception in memory of his gran.
