THERE is a chance to get a behind the scene glimpse of some of the area’s historical buildings next month.

They will open their doors as part of the national Heritage Open Days.

Heritage Open Days bring together 5,000 events for four days in September each year, allowing the public special access to sites.

This year local buildings taking part include The Jesse Haworth Memorial Church in Walshaw, now known as Christ Church, a landmark church visible from miles around.

Visits will have the opportunity to tour the church which is normally open only on a very restricted basis.

The Victorian Gothic style building will be open from 1.30pm until 4.30pm on September 7 and 8, from 11am until 4.30pm on September 9 and between 12pm and 1pm on September 10. No bookings are required for this visit.

The Fusilier Museum in Moss Street will host the Fusilier Tour of Bury as part of the Heritage Open Days festival.

The tour will explore the relationship between the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and the people and town of Bury.

The tours will run between 2pm and 3.30pm on September 7. Call the Bury Tourist Information Centre on 0161 253 5111 to book a place.

St John the Baptist Church, Bircle in Castle Hill Road will also welcome visitors to enjoy the spectacular panoramic views over Bury, Rochdale and the Pennines.

The grade II listed building was built in 1846, and designed by architect George Shaw of Uppermill.

Stalls selling locally made crafts and light refreshments will so also be available.

The church will be open to visitors from 1pm to 4.30pm on September 8 and 10am until 4.30pm on September 9. No bookings are required.
