JON Macken is convinced he can bring success to Radcliffe FC.

The former Preston and Manchester City striker, who has been coaching at the Oldham Athletic Academy since hanging up his boots two years ago, was unveiled as the club’s new manager before Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Skelmersdale United.

Boro remain 18th in Evo-Stik North after claiming just their second win in eight league matches, but Macken has seen enough of the squad and the set-up to believe he can turn their fortunes around in his first role in management.

“Everything was there, it is just the results that weren’t,” said the former Manchester United trainee.

“That’s no disrespect to the previous manager, just for one reason or another the results did not happen for him. It is my job to change that and take the team forward in the same direction the club is heading off the pitch.

“I took the job because I felt the people behind the scenes share the same ambition as me. If we work together – the players, chairman and owner – then I believe Radcliffe FC can really achieve something.”

Macken is looking forward to taking his place in the dugout for the first time at bottom side Ossett Albion on Saturday after watching from the stands last weekend.

And the new boss revealed he would be stepping down from his coaching duties at Oldham to concentrate on the job full time.

“I am going to give Radcliffe my full focus,” he added. “Tony Philliskirk, along with Simon Cooper and Pete Wild, really helped me at Oldham and I would like to thank them for giving me my first job in coaching.

“I wanted to commit to my first management role in just the same way. It might be a part-time role but I am going to approach it like a full-time job and hopefully the we will all reap the rewards.”

Macken wasted little time in making his first signing, with the club yesterday announcing the arrival of former Rochdale and FC United forward James Hooper.

Chairman Paul Hilton said: “James is a great addition to the squad, a really exciting player who we believe will be back in the Football League very soon.”

“The club is already on a high after the appointment of Jon and Saturday’s thumping win, this signing continues that positive trend and is hopefully a sign of things to come.”
