THE council is looking to employ someone to 'reduce hate crime and prevent the growth of extremism in the borough'.

The local authority is seeking to employ a Community Cohesion Officer to join the Community Safety Team based at the town hall.

According to the job description the full time role involves contributing to strategy, developing and delivering training and liaising with colleagues across Greater Manchester.

As part of the job, the new officer would have to lead on both the preventing violent extremism and hate crime agendas in the borough.

Cllr Tamoor Tariq, the cabinet member for communities, explained the council was looking to fill an existing position, which was being vacated due to a member of staff moving into a sports development role.

He said reducing hate crime and preventing the growth of extremism was not necessarily any more of an issue than anything else in the borough.

Cllr Tariq said: "We have a statutory responsibility to have someone looking at community cohesion."

He added: "It's an opportunity for us to have a fresh pair of eyes and look at ways we can build on our successes.

"We have run a number of successful campaigns around hate crime and Prevent."

The salary for the permanent position is £23,206 and the deadline for applicants is noon, Friday, September, 29.
