ARTWORKS created by people recovering from mental health issues have gone on display.

All of the work on display has been produced by members of Start In Bury and is made up of a collection of drawings and paintings.

Around 40 pieces of art are on display at Bury's Art Gallery and Sculpture Museum until November 4.

The framed works include landscapes and portraits as well as multicoloured abstract imaginings.

A variety of themes and subjects are explored in the unique exhibition.

Jack Wright, who co-runs the group with Lisa Broadhurst, said: "The exhibition is about visual art, the drawings, paintings which have been produced by our individuals over the year.

"It's a given that people being creative allows them to express themselves on their own terms.

"There's no exams and the members can set their own agenda.

"It's not just art therapy, it's informal and about treating people as productive members of society."

The exhibition runs through the whole of October and coincides with World Mental Health Day on October 10. Start In Bury has been helping people for 22 years and is run entirely by volunteers out of Manchester Road Community Centre for its 50 members.

It uses art not just as therapy but as a way to build confidence and social skills while developing creativity.

Mr Wright said: "This exhibition is more of a showcase of for our group to show what our artists have produced."

The exhibition is already on view in the gallery in Moss Street but will be officially opened by Bury's Mayor Cllr Dorothy Gunther on Wednesday at 11am.
