A BURY business has been given a warning – after mice were discovered in the basement.

Saporito, in Bury Market, was given a zero rating for food hygiene following an inspection in June.

Inspectors from Bury Council found evidence of mice infestation and droppings throughout the basement unit and on food packaging and consumables, as well as issues with documentation.

A council spokesperson said: “The presence of mice was swiftly dealt with by Bury Market management, Environmental Health and pest control, and is now controlled, but as an extra precaution regular pest control visits are continuing. At the time of the inspection, it was not necessary to close Saporito because the owner voluntarily carried out a deep clean of the separate storage area and removed the risk. We are satisfied that this was an isolated incident that was quickly dealt with and resolved.”

Saporito’s owner Liam Reeves said: “The stock that was in the basement was destroyed and the issues have since been rectified. We have voluntarily requested another inspection from the council which is due to take place in the next few weeks.”

The delicatessen, based in Toulmin Block on the outdoor market, was one of three Bury businesses to be awarded the lowest rating. The others were Jubilee Chipshop in Ainsworth Road, Radcliffe, and Kashmir Superstore in Rochdale Road, Bury.

An ‘active rat infestation’ was found in Kashmir, and the shop was subsequently shut by inspectors and issued with a hygiene emergency prohibition notice. It reopened days later and owners said that the problem had been dealt with.

The owner of Jubilee Chipshop said their low rating was due to issues with paperwork.

A total of 783 businesses were given a five star rating, 147 were given four stars, 68 received a ‘generally satisfactory’ three rating, and 19 received a rating of two, meaning ‘improvement necessary’. Each business is given their hygiene rating by the Food Standards Agency when it is inspected by a food safety officer from Bury Council.

The scheme is run by local authorities and applies to restaurants, pubs, cafes, takeaways, hotels, supermarkets and other food shops. The food safety officer inspecting the business checks how well the business is meeting the law by looking at how hygienically the food is handled, the condition of the structure of the buildings, and how the business makes sure food is safe.

Visits from the authority occur at different times and some businesses may be waiting on forthcoming inspections.

Some may have changed management or closed in the interim.

We will update our list in the coming months.
