POLICE are investigating after a boy was threatened with a knife at a Bury school.

The incident happened at Bury Church of England High School last Tuesday, October 17 during morning school.

Police said the incident is believed to have taken place at about 11am and no one was injured.

Officers were called to the school, in Haslam Brow, near to Bury town centre two hours later. They say their inquiries are ongoing and no arrests have been made.

The school's headteacher, the Reverend Craig Watson, was approached three times for comment last week but declined to respond. The school is on half-term this week.

The Diocese of Manchester was approached for comment, but said that it had nothing to add to the police statement.

A school governor told the Bury Times that he also did not wish to comment and recommended contacting the school again on Monday when staff return from half term.

Bury Church is a voluntary aided school, which means that it is state-funded but the diocese contributes to building costs and has an influence over its governance.

The school is currently in the process of converting into an academy.

In its most recent Ofsted inspection in 2016, the school, which has approximately 800 pupils, was awarded a rating of 'good'.

A behaviour and discipline policy, listed on Bury Church's website, says that staff have the power to search for knives and other weapons, and that permanent exclusion will normally result if a pupil is found to be using a knife or weapon.

Figures released from 32 police forces in England and Wales earlier this year showed that almost 500 knives were seized in schools between April, 2015 and March, 2017.

In June, it was announced that all secondary schools in London would be offered knife detectors to check pupils for weapons as part of a major crackdown on knife crime in the capital.

Only last week, 15-year-old Kyron Webb died after sustaining serious knife wounds in Moston, in north Manchester.

Two boys, aged 16 and 17, who cannot be named for legal reasons, have both been charged with his murder.
