REPAIRS have been carried out in Greenmount as part of a £10 million programme to improve roads across the north of the borough.

The work, which took place on Longsight Road at its junction with Vernon Road last week, is part of Bury Council’s plan to improve roads in Bury, Tottington and Ramsbottom.

Council leader Rishi Shori visited the road and even got behind the wheel of a roller.

He said: “The condition of our roads is one of the biggest concerns residents have, which is why I decided to raise an extra £10 million in this year’s budget to spend on improving them.

“This work in Longsight Road is a classic example of what we want to achieve. While the defects were not dangerous, we decided to carry out repairs to prevent them from becoming dangerous due to deterioration over the winter months.

“We are planning an extensive range of road improvements in the months to come, and these will be announced early next year.”

The council say they are also looking at bringing in a computerised system to help residents flag up road problems and keep them informed about when they will be repaired.

In September, councillors voted to address concerns about dangerous potholes across Bury following an inquest into the death of Ramsbottom resident, Roger Hamer, who died after his bicycle hit a pothole in Bury New Road in April 2016.

A jury concluded that the 83-year-old probably hit a large pothole which caused him to come off his bike causing a fatal brain injury.

The pothole had been reported to the council earlier in the year.
