A WOMAN has hit out at McDonald's over their treatment of a group of homeless men in one of their Bury restaurants.

Naomi Entwistle, aged 26, was in McDonald's in Woodfields Retail Park with her partner Aiden at about 11pm last Monday.

Ms Entwistle, who lives in Haslingden but hails from Bury, said that the three homeless men were sat at a table in the corner of the restaurant with hot drinks.

But, she claims that the trio were then asked to leave after one asked a member of staff if they could reheat his drink.

She said: “We were coming to the end of eating our food and I saw one of the men ask if he could have his drink warmed up.

“The staff refused stating they had been in there too long and the manager wanted them to leave.

“We were just in absolute shock. We asked if they were OK and if they wanted any more drinks, but they said it was fine.”

Ms Entwistle says that when she expressed her disgust to staff, and asked to speak to a manager, she was met with ‘a barrage of sarcasm and unnecessary comments from staff’.

She alleges that one member of staff responded by saying ‘we are not a charity’.

She claims that a manager did arrive, but only after multiple requests, and that even then she was unhappy with the response she received.

She said: “She said they had been routing through the bins to get drinks stickers and said it was nothing to do with us because we didn’t know the situation. She was so disrespectful.

“We were trying to tell her to put herself in their shoes. They are just trying to stay warm and weren’t doing any harm sat in the corner.

“It’s no skin off McDonald's teeth. They probably have more trouble with kids messing about in there.

“You don’t have to be a charity to have compassion for someone who is struggling. We need to look after people. We don’t know other people’s circumstances.

“We spoke to the guys after and some of the stories they were coming out with were heart breaking. They said they were finding it difficult.

“One of them said he had slipped in the toilet at McDonald's because the floor was wet. He pulled the cord and no one came. It’s absolutely appalling.

“I’m never going back to that place again.”

However, McDonald's claim that the men had been involved in a number of incidents of anti-social behaviour throughout the day.

A spokesman for the company said: "We welcome all customers into our restaurants and there is no policy in place which does not allow service to homeless individuals, or those wishing to purchase food or drink on their behalf.

"However, the safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is of the utmost importance and as such any person causing disruption in our restaurants will always be asked to leave.”
