BURY is gearing up for Fairtrade Fortnight.

The fortnight, which this year runs from February 26 to March 11, aims to shine a spotlight on millions of farmers who produce the foods we eat but still do not make enough money to feed their families.

Ahead of the event Bury Fairtrade group's new chair Rachel Kennedy and vice-chair Laura Chepner are expanding the groups horizons and pushing to raise awareness about how and where to buy ethical products.

Ms Kennedy said: “We are seeing more and more people looking to buy ethically sourced products and Fairtrade is a big part of that.

"Most people are aware of Fairtrade tea, coffee and chocolate but there is a growing number of products to look out for such as flowers and wine and even jewellery.

"What people might not realise is that by choosing just a few Fairtrade options while shopping helps to improve the living conditions of those producers.”

Over the fortnight Bury faith communities will be showing their support including services at Bury Unitary Church on Match 4, and Brandlesholme Methodists on March 18.

There will be ethical chocolate sampling from Devine and the Co-op at the Mill Gate on February 28, and Bury Fairtrade are looking to add a Fairtrade element to the Ramsbottom Chocolate Festival in March.

Bury Council will also be showing the borough's commitment to Fairtrade status by promoting this year's fortnight's theme Come in to Fairtrade across council buildings.

Councillor Rishi Shori, leader of the council, said: “Fairtrade Fortnight is an excellent way for Bury residents to show their support for the principles of fair trade, ensuring that growers, suppliers and businesses across Britain and the world receive a fair deal.”
