PLANNING chiefs were sweet on proposals to allow a property in Redvales to be used as an ice cream parlour and cafe.

The scheme was given the unanimous “thumbs up” by Bury Council’s planning committee when it discussed the scheme at the town hall.

Mr S Ahmed applied to the council for permission to use the use the property, in Parkhills Road, as a diner.

Approval had been granted to convert it into two shops five years ago, and building work at the premises is still ongoing.

No one spoke against the application at the meeting, but the council had received written objections on the grounds of parking, pedestrian safety and litter.

But officers recommended the committee approve the scheme, and members were happy to do so.

Cllr Yvonne Wright said: “As this area is very well served by takeaways I’m really glad to see it’s not a takeaway.

“I’ve expressed my concern over many years and you will be aware from the media and many TV programmes that takeaways, particularly in deprived areas, are impacting on people’s health and causing obesity.

I wish this chap good luck, I hope it’s a success and we don’t see it turned into another takeaway.”

And Cllr Jamie Walker said he “fully supported” the application particularly as the area has already has several shops.
