AN ANGLING group is crowdfunding for equipment to help them in their mission to improve the environment.

Bury-based Little Britain Anglers are in need of tools to assist in their work to clean up the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal, the River Irwell and the surrounding area.

To volunteer-led group hopes to raise around £1,000 via a new Just-Giving page that has been set up.

Chairman Eric Owen said: "We are raise money for more tools such as spades, brushes and hedge cutters.

"These will help us to carry out more work across Bury and Radcliffe, including cleaning up overgrown areas and removing litter from the rivers, and allow us to do these jobs more efficiently."

Little Britain Anglers is a small community fishing club working to protect wildlife, birds, and plantlife.

But the group regularly carries out tasks to help the wider community such as litter picks, efforts to combat pollution, and calling for action over fly-tipping.

Member of the group Elizabeth Evans said: "We want to help change the local area by undertaking litter picks, habitat improvements and more.

"We are also hoping to install bird nest boxes and bat boxes on the trees surrounding the canal and River Irwell.

"Please donate what you can. Thank you in advance."

The group is also hosting a free 'Let's fish' event for adults and children this weekend.

Visitors are invited to attend the Royal Oak Basin, Radcliffe, between 10am and 3pm on Saturday.

The event is part of the Canal and River Trust's Let’s fish! campaign to encourage more people to learn and enjoy angling.
