SERIOUS smoke damage was caused to a kitchen after a washing machine fire.

The appliance was completely destroyed in the blaze at a house in Scobell Street, Tottington.

Crews from Bury and Whitefield were called to the property at about 5.30pm on Thursday.

The fire service's response, which included using breathing apparatus and a hose reel, was led by Bury watch manager Peter Fletcher.

There were no householders at home at the time of the blaze but the owners returned to the property while the fire crews were in attendance.

Rick Taylor, watch manager at Bury fire station, said: "We were called at 5.30pm to a fire involving a washing machine which had spread to part of the kitchen.

"The occupants were not home at the time.

"There was extensive smoke damage to the kitchen.

"There were smoke alarms fitted inside the house but the occupiers were not at home."

Mr Taylor urged residents to ensure they have smoke alarms fitted.
