WORKS have begun to improve a 'dangerous' road on the border of Radcliffe and Little Lever that has plagued with potholes.

The much-needed resurfacing of Stopes Road began on Monday, with works due to continue for up to four weeks.

It follows calls from residents to fix the potholes and smooth over the road, which had been left in a poor condition for several months.

Cllr Jamie Walker, who represents Radcliffe North, said: “I have been working hard with Council leader Rishi Shori and Cllr David Evans, who represents Little Lever on Bolton Council, to ensure that works are done on this stretch of road as it had become dangerous.

"We have listened to local residents and acted upon their concerns."

The improvements are part of a £2million investment in Radcliffe's roads throughout 2018, after Bury Council borrowed £10million for the borough's highways as part of a three-year scheme.

Council leader Rishi Shori, who represents Radcliffe West, said: "This scheme is part of the overall £2million investment in Radcliffe’s roads promised before the local elections and we are keeping our election promises by getting it done."

The road will be resurfaced, drainage repairs will be undertaken, and the footpath will be improved from the Bolton boundary to, and including, the roundabout at the junction between Bolton Road and Countess Lane.

Temporary traffic lights will be in place while work is carried out on week days. However, the lights will not generally be in operation during peak times.

Sections of Bolton Road, Milton Road and Countess Lane will need to be shut off at times. Signed diversions will be in place during the closures.

An information leaflet distributed to residents reads: "Unfortunately, when undertaking a scheme of this nature, some disruption is unavoidable; nevertheless Bury Council will endeavour to keep this to a minimum."

The Council has asked residents to remove their vehicles from Stopes Road during the works.

Cllr David Evans sad: “I would just like to place on record my thanks to Bury Council, Cllr Walker and Cllr Shori for listening to residents concerns on this matter and having the timescales for the resurfacing works brought forward.

“This has been a great piece of cross-boundary working."

Complaints about noise levels, or enquiries about the works, can be made between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, via 0161 253 5353 or engcon@bury.gov.uk.
