ROADWORKS will be in place on a busy Ramsbottom road for eight weeks to allow work to be carried out to replace gas pipes.

The project to upgrade an ageing metallic mains pipe in Bolton Street with a more durable plastic one is due to get under way on Monday.

About 450 metres of pipe will be replaced, starting at Bolton Street’s junction with Dundee Lane, down to Lever Street.

The work will be carried out by Balfour Beatty on behalf of gas network Cadent, who say they are carrying out the work during the school summer holidays to minimise disruption caused by teams needing to work in the road.

The work will be carried out using a technique that will keep gas flowing to homes throughout the work. Service pipes at some properties will also be replaced, which may mean a temporary disruption to each property’s supply as the next connection is made.

The following temporary traffic arrangements will be in place while the work takes place:

• Four-way traffic lights will control traffic using the junction of Dundee Lane, Bolton Street and Nuttall Lane

• Traffic moving along Bolton Street will be controlled by two-way traffic lights

• Access from and to Kay Brow will not be possible for approximately two weeks towards the end of the project

Steve Murray, who heads Cadent’s mains replacement programme in the North West, said: “We’ve had to fix a number of small leaks on this metallic pipe in recent years. These are clear signs this pipe is simply reaching the end of its life, so we need to get in there and replace it.

“This will ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas until at least the end of the century.”
