TOWN hall chiefs have unanimously backed a campaign to ban the use of tyres older than 10 years on commercial vehicles.

Cllr Sandra Walmsley, tabled a motion calling on the full council to support Tyred, which was set up by Frances Molloy, whose son Michael died in a coach crash caused by an ageing tyre.

She said: “Despite widespread public and political support for this campaign, no change in the law has been made, shamefully leaving others at risk from faulty and dangerous tyres.” Cllr Mary Whitby said Mrs Molloy would be grateful for the chamber’s support and she hoped the campaign would now gain “further momentum”.
