BURY North MP James Frith has set schools and young people in Bury a challenge this summer – to think of innovative ways they can reduce plastic waste in the town.
Mr Frith's summer project has gone out to every school in Bury, Tottington and Ramsbottom and includes a pack for pupils to complete over the summer holidays.
Youngsters are asked to research alternatives to using plastic products such as toothbrushes and plastic bags, to carry out litter-picking activities, find out about eco-friendly businesses nearby and design a poster encouraging people in Bury to be more environmentally friendly.
Schools will collect points for participating in the project and there will be an awards ceremony in the autumn.
Mr Frith said: “Plastic waste is a huge problem for our town and our planet.
"While there needs to be more action at a national and international level, there are lots of things we can do locally to reduce plastic waste and make our town more environmentally friendly.
"I am delighted that half a dozen schools have already confirmed their involvement in the project and I hope lots more schools and young people will sign up.”
