TWO young campaigners have paid a visit to Bury South MP Ivan Lewis to help bring an end to climate change.

Sophie Aulton, aged 22, from Prestwich, and Rosie Heaton from Salford, representing the international development charity CAFOD, met with Mr Lewis as part of a week of action on global warming by The Climate Coalition.

At the meeting the pair sought to start a conversation about the dangers posed by climate change, and thanked Mr Lewis for his commitment to tackling the issue — presenting him with a homemade green heart cake.

Miss Aulton, who has just finished a year of volunteering with CAFOD, visiting communities in Central America affected by climate change, said: “It was great to meet Mr Lewis. Climate change is a very real and urgent issue, affecting our local community but also some of the world’s poorest communities overseas."

After the visit Mr Lewis joined more than 100 fellow MPs in signing a cross-party letter to the Prime Minister encouraging that nation's leaders to pledge to commit to ending the UK's contribution to climate change before 2050.

A goal which 64 per cent of adults support, according to a recent appeal Opinium poll found.

Mr Lewis said: “I’m delighted to support The Climate Coalition campaign to ensure the government fulfil their commitments as required by the Paris climate change agreement.

“CAFOD campaigners such as Rosie and Sophie are doing an excellent job in building all party support for the campaign.”

Miss Aulton added: “We need to act now, so it is amazing to know that we have the support of our local MP in Bury South and more than a hundred others of all parties across Britain. By working together, we can make a difference.”

The Climate Coalition is an alliance of over 130 organisation, including the National Trust, Women's Institute, Oxfam and RSPB; which works to combat climate change and protect the UK's natural environment.

The group regularly meets with politicians and last month was joined by hundreds of people seeking to strike up a national conversation about the threat climate change poses, as part of its Speak Up Week.
