A TEENAGER who threatened to jump from a motorway bridge has been rescued by the emergency services.

Police, Fire and Ambulance crews attended the scene at junction 17 of the M60 at Prestwich at 9pm on Monday.

The motorway was closed in both directions for almost an hour to allow a hydraulic platform to be put into position.

Whitefield Fire Station watch manager, Mr Tony Wellock, said: "A 19-year-old female had left hospital and made for the bridge. She climbed onto the outer protective cage of the bridge, outside the railings, and threatened to jump.

"Two policemen and two PCSOs were able to tie straps around her legs and waist, and firefighter Gareth Houghton managed to follow her onto the bridge cage where he straddled her and attached a harness."

The woman was safely brought down from the bridge and put into police custody.
