PEDESTRIANS should take care when crossing a busy town centre road and not rely on the beeping when crossing the road.

The crossing over Great Moor Street by Newport Pharmacy is out of sync at the moment.

When the green man lights up the beeping noise for the visually impaired does not occur until it is almost time for the red man.

71-year-old Doreen Locke noticed the fault and visited the town hall to report the issue five weeks ago on Monday.

Mrs Locke, who lives in Roscoe Avenue, Breightmet said: “It has a noise and that noise doesn’t come on until the green man is ready for going off. It’s dangerous for people who are listening for the green man.

“I can see it, I watch for it, but for people who can’t see it it’s dangerous and I think there’s been accidents at that crossing. I don’t think it’s safe, it’s not safe, it’s ridiculous.”

Traffic lights are looked after by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and a link on the Bolton Council website takes residents to the TfGM website.

Mrs Locke explained she cannot use computers and visited Bolton Town Hall to report the problem.

She said while she was there a member of staff used a computer to report the problem for her.

A link on the Bolton Council website for reporting faulty traffic lights takes users to the TfGM website which provides contact details for reporting problems with lights.

However, a spokesman for TfGM says it was no record of a problem with the lights ever being reported to them.

Following The Bolton News' call a member of staff was despatched to Great Moor Street yesterday to investigate the issue.
