Former school leaders inspire the Grammar School boys of today

OLD and young came together for a reunion of former captains and vice-captains at Bury Grammar School Boys.

More than 40 former pupils visited the school in Bridge Road for the occasion.

The oldest guest was Colonel Dennis Walton, who was the school captain in 1939. He received the Military Cross for his service during the Second World War, and was later awarded the OBE and CBE.

The youngest guest was 17-year-old Ciaran McCaughey, who is the current school captain.

Other Old Boys to attend the event included Sir Brian Cubbon, who was vice-captain in 1946 and later became a Permanent Secretary in the Home Office, and Alistair Burt, who was school captain in 1973 and later became MP for Bury North.

Headmaster, the Reverend Steven Harvey, said: "Captains and vice-captains are very important people in the life of the school. They attain their positions because they are deemed by staff and boys to set a fine example of involvement and commitment and to possess leadership qualities of a high order.

"We are always delighted when captains and vice-captains go on to achieve great things through leadership and service after they leave BGSB.

"We were thrilled to welcome back so many distinguished Old Boys for what was a most enjoyable and memorable day.

"I am sure that boys at the school today will feel inspired by the achievements of their predecessors."
