A HAIRDRESSER turned on the style when he entered his first competition.
For Saul Higgens, of Royds Street, Bury, was awarded third place in a contest to find the best apprentice in the North West.
The 31-year-old has spent the last two years on a modern apprenticeship course with Rochdale salon Jamilla Paul.
He said: "It was my first competition and I was very surprised to do so well. Everyone's very excited, especially at the salon."
Saul decided to try his hand at hairdressing after working as a barber for six years.
He said: "Barbering was something I'd been doing for a while and hairdressing was just an extension of that really. I realised that there is a lot more going on in hairdressing than barbering. I'm absolutely loving the apprenticeship and learning a lot of new skills."
He has now qualified to work as a hairdresser and spends time cutting hair at Jamilla Paul. He also continues to run his own business, Saul's Barbers, in Walmersley Road, Bury.
