THE principal of top-ranking Holy Cross College has resigned after a dispute with the chairman of governors.

Mr Mike O'Hare will step down in August after being in charge of the Catholic sixth-form centre for 15 years, during which time it has become one of the best in the country.

His shock resignation follows an argument with Anne Fox, chairman of the board of governors, about the appointment of a deputy principal in May last year.

Mr O'Hare disagreed with the selection committee's preferred candidate, and wrote to Ms Fox about his concerns. He also discussed the matter with staff at the college in Manchester Road.

But Ms Fox claimed that he had breached confidentiality by speaking to the staff members and issued a written warning. An appeal, held by Ms Fox, was dismissed in November.

Mr O'Hare told the Bury Times: "I had been planning to leave either this summer or next, but this has crystallised the decision in a way. It's been a very difficult seven months for me."

Mr O'Hare handed in his letter of resignation on January 4, creating both anger and dismay among his 192 members of staff.

A letter signed by 187 staff members has been sent to Ms Fox, calling for a meeting with the board of governors. It is hoped that the matter will be discussed at a governors' meeting tomorrow.

Mr O'Hare said: "I have been overwhelmed by the support I have received from the staff. It's been quite emotional. I have had cards and emails and all sorts of things from them.

"They are angry and upset that I have been given a written warning for what I see and they see as doing nothing wrong. I think they would like the written warning to be removed because they feel it was totally unjustified."

Mr O'Hare believes that he has been treated unfairly.

He said: "I wouldn't want the students to think that I have done something wrong, because I don't consider that I have. It is inconceivable for me not to share everything with the staff, because we work as a team.

"I am sad that the written warning was given to me. It is unfair that the same person was involved with the warning and the appeal. It's almost like they were the judge, jury and executioner. Usually people get these warnings for fraud or inappropriate behaviour."

Mr O'Hare (63), who lives in Middleton, will leave the college in August after the publication of A-level results.

He joined Holy Cross College in December, 1980, having previously taught at schools in Salford, Oldham, and Liverpool.

He taught general studies and economics before taking over as principal 15 years ago.

During that time, he has led the college through three major building programmes and seen it grow from 350 to 1,750 students.

He has spearheaded the college to become ranked amongst the best in the country, achieving excellent A-level results and outstanding Ofsted inspections.

Mr O'Hare was also invited to attend two seminars at Downing Street, hosted by Tony Blair, because of the college's glowing reputation.

During his retirement, he plans to spend more time with his wife of 37 years, Maureen, and their three children. He will also enjoy his hobbies of playing tennis and walking.

Despite everything that has happened, Mr O'Hare says he is leaving the college at the right time.

He said: "The college faces a number of issues in the next few years, including the introduction of diplomas, a new building programme, and the possibility of changes to funding arrangements, which require a principal who will be able to take the college forward over the next crucial stages of its development.

"I am 63 and coming to the end of my career, but I am sad to be leaving in these circumstances. It has been an incredible privilege and pleasure to work with the staff and the students. I have been very happy here."

Ms Fox declined to comment.

Mike O'Hare has been, and continues to be, an inspiration to his staff, students and many many others both locally, nationally and internationally. He is a man of true integrity, modesty, selflessness and patience, a man who represents what a person true to the catholic faith should be.
Mike has and will always do that which he believes to be right for Holy Cross College and the community it serves and he should be congratulated for this.

The word "inspirational" springs to mind. Mike is genuinely inspirational; he touches the lives of so many people, staff and students alike. I'm proud to know him and work with him. He has had a profound influence on me. The saddest think of all is that the students planning to attend the college over the next few year’s have been robbed of a life changing experience of this truly remarkable man that has moulded so many of our life’s and careers.

Both of my children have been through Holy Cross under the leadership of Mr O'Hare. What a fantastic man he is. Inspirational to the staff and students but equally importantly to the parents of the children entrusting their children's education to him. Although the primary goal of the college is to educate anyone who has seen the drama and dance productions at the college such as Oliver, Romeo & Juliet or the Christmas shows will see that Holy Cross is a college comfortable in its own skin - the sign of a good leader.
Mr O'Hare would not know me from Adam but on the few times I've been at the college (parents evening, concerts etc) he has always engaged in conversation in a most comfortable and professional manner.
It is to be hoped that some higher authority gets involved in this case, preferably from the Government rather the the LEA. Although Mr O'Hare would be leaving seen anyway this matter should not be left to simply die away. Someone needs to explain how the same person can both issue a earning and then chair an appeal against that same warning - this would not happen in industry. I'm not aware of who Ms Fox is or what the terms of reference a chair of governors operates under or what powers they have but something doesn't see quite right to me.
Finally I hope the memory and legacy of Mr O'Hare is not forgotten and something permanent is done to recognise his memory. E.g. a painting or naming a building after him. This will be a true sign of character from the governors to honour a man who has done great things for the college but left under not ideal circumstances.

How terrible that Mr. O'Hare has been forced out of Holy Cross by the beaurocrats.
Holy Cross was a fantastic college when I attended in 1998-2000, and clearly since then it has developed even further in both size and reputation.
When will the powers that be learn that if it isn't broken, don't fix it??
To disregard the opinions of Mr. O'Hare, and the other staff at the college, is an insult to their status, expertise and continued investment in the students of Holy Cross.

I am deeply distressed by the way Mike has been treated by the Governors. I have never worked in an establishment where I have ben made to feel as welcome as I have at Holy Cross, and having worked for Mike for a number of years, I have nothing but respect for him and his running of the College. Mike O'Hare has regularly gone out of his way to help me and my colleagues, and has ALWAYS had the best interests of the College, its staff and students at heart, regardless of what the Governors may think. I too will be sad to see him go under such circumstances, the man should be leaving Holy Cross as a hero, not under the cloud of a completely inappropriate warning from the Governors.

As a parent I have nothing but praise and admiration for Mr O'Hare after witnessing the outstanding contribution he has made to the education of pupils in Bury and in the way he manages his college and staff. You only have to look at the results and league tables to see the evidence for this. I'm afraid I cannot say the same for Ms Fox, unless others can enlighten us on what contribution she has made to the education system in Bury. I doubt her results are as good. Those in their ivory towers should stop interfering.

What’s the world coming to when the principal of one of the top college’s in the country is disciplined for disagreeing with the selection committee's favoured candidate, and then went on to discuss his feeling with staff members. I believe the position in question was that of Deputy Principal. So here goes... Do the Board of Gov’s think that by ignoring the judgement of Mr O’Hare was in the best interest of the college, or is this just political? Mr O’Hare and his staff have guided this college to great heights and using his judgment when appointing staff that can exceed all expectation when joining this fantastic college and the league tables speaks load and clear. So why not listen when this astonishing man raises concerns? This whole situation is CRIMANAL.

I was appalled to read about the manner in which Mr O'Hare has been treated by Ms Fox and what I can only imagine must be her cronies on the governing body of the college. Mr O'Hare has been an outstanding servant to the young people of Bury, transforming the sixth form college into one of the most highly regarded and successful colleges in the country. I note in a separate article in the paper that Holy Cross is the eighth most successful college in the country for the third year running - how could Ms Fox possibly believe that her actions as both judge and jury be in the best interests of the students and the wider Bury community. Who will rectify this wrong? Surely it should be the Governing Body that are held to account. What future will the College have when the current governing body will be appointing Mr O'Hare's replacement? Especially in the light of your report indicating that it was Mr O'Hare's disagreement with the Governing bodies preferred candidate that led to this sorry state of affairs in the first instance. Can we have any confidence whatever in their ability to appoint someone who will lead the college with the same integrity and inspirational leadership that Mr O'Hare has demonstrated so successfully over the 15 years of his tenure. Something must be done!

I am parent of two ex-students and he husband of one of Mr O'Hare's extremely dedicated staff.
I have nothing but praise for Mr OHare and his loyal and hard working staff.
I echo all the previous comments, for him to be treated in this despicable way I find unbelievable. For people who have been appointed to support and promote the college to treat one of their major assets in such a shabby manner is frightening.I had always believed that the main role of governors was to be supportive and to act on positive advice from staff and students in promoting the best for the College.
We pride ourselves in being a fair and democratic society, where then is the natural justice when people can bring a charge, then act as judge and jury in both a first hearing and then again at the appeal.
My best wishes to Mr O'Hare and his family.I hope that this situation can be rectified-perhaps the governors may have the good grace and sense to remove this unnecessary stain on his previously unblemished record. If not then perhaps the Secretary of State could be lobbied to intervene?

I am shocked and appauled with the disrespect and frankly absurd treatment of Mr O'Hare, resulting in a Holy Cross Hero being forced to resign. I should hope Ms. Anne Fox has properly thought of the backlash of her ignorance has and will cause.

CORRECTION TO THE ARTICLE

I feel the actual facts need to be stated, as there is a slight error in what is otherwise, a well written article.

In the article it states:

”He also discussed the matter with staff at the college in Manchester Road. But Ms Fox claimed that he had breached confidentiality by speaking to the staff members and issued a written warning…”

THIS IS UNTRUE - Mr O’Hare discussed the matter with the College Management Team (CMT) only. The CMT is made up of Assistant Principles and normally a Deputy Principle (post vacant). It could be misconstrued that the Principle discussed the appointment in a ‘matter of fact basis’ with all the staff – INCORRECT.

By discussing the matter with CMT, Mr O’Hare was following what could be seen as a normal course of communication, keeping the CMT informed of what is a very serious concern within the college - the successful appointment of a SUITABLE Deputy Principle (the person favoured by Ms Fox was in no way suitable for the position). I suppose it could be said that it is similar to a Chief Executive of a Company keeping his Board of Directors informed of a major decision - perfectly correct and natural.

The staff, that is the remainder of those employed by the College, were only informed on the 15th January 2008, after Mr O’Hare had formally resigned, following a hearing chaired by both accuser and executioner (Ms Fox) – incredible!

This situation must not be allowed to dissipate into the atmosphere; it must be taken up by those in a far higher authority and ensure the person/persons responsible are brought to book and not allowed to make such ludicrous decisions in the future.

I have nothing but praise for Mr O’Hare, in the many years I have been privileged to be a member of his team, I have received nothing but support, understanding and assistance in performing my teaching duties to the highest standard – this is borne out in the College’s outstanding results and the comments made so far.

I will miss him and he will be sadly missed by all students and staff.

I am an ex-student of Holy Cross who continues to have many ties with the College and its staff. Mr. O'Hare, his senior management team and staff are nothing short of excellent and the College's fantastic reputation and league-table rankings reflect the hard work and dedication of the team led by Mr. O'Hare over the years. What has happened is, to me, plain and simple bullying. This great man has been forced out by a woman who has no real idea of just how much work goes on at that College on a day-to-day basis and I find the fact that she has declined to comment very apt. Nothing she could say would justify this appalling treatment of Mr. O'Hare and the total disregard for the management and staff who will continue to work hard for this College long after he leaves. If Ms Fox cared in any way about the wellbeing of the staff and the students, she would step down from her position as Head of Governors. Finding anyone worthy of replacing Mr. O’Hare will be a difficult enough task as it is, but surely nobody will want this job knowing that they will be under the control of such an unsupportive and undemocratic Governing Body. I imagine the staff of the College would have grounds to strike over this disgusting injustice that has taken place, but they have, as always, considered the needs of the students as a priority. Ms Fox should do the same. In the meantime, I wish Mr. O’Hare all the best and hope that this decision on disciplinary action will be reversed so that he can retire with the immaculate professional record he deserves.

When men of honour are challenged for upholding principles that guide them to be "special" one has to question the motivation of those who raise the challange.
I see only small minds at work and I am sure this beacon of a man will be vindicated. So sad that Mike has been forced to leave Holy Cross under such circumstances. Your legacy Sir will be recalled by all who have had the privilege to have known, be taught and worked with you.Anne Fox?.Anne Who? Let us all pray that those engaged in this ridiculous situation find the good grace to recind this stain which has been placed on the unblemished character of a fine man.

How sad that such a successful career should end like this. Mike O'Hare has been an inspiration to staff, students and parents. Part of his success has been his distributed leadership which involves sharing and discussing information with his senior leaders, the college management team, who he knows can be trusted and act professionally. I am saddened that one governor believes they can hold so much power that a well respected leader feels their only option is to resign. If Mike O'Hare had not expressed concern about the proposed appointment he would have been derelict in his duty. After all who is it that has to work with the deputy principal on a daily basis? Not Ms Fox. There should also be a full investigation by the local authority into the procedures followed by the chair. It is clear that there should be a vote of no confidence in the Chair of governors. However the damage has now been done and Bury has lost an excellent practitioner.

Anne Fox should be ashamed of herself, I wonder if this deputy was employed because of who they knew on the governors and not their prior experience. It is a disgrace. All my 3 children have gone to holy cross, it is excellent because it has an excellent leader and staff members. Mike O'Hare is a very professional man who I personally have nothing but admiration for. God Bless you it must have been something corrupt for you to take this stance.

I am disgusted by the way this incredible and inspirational man has been treated. As an ex-student of the college I have had first hand experience of M.O'Hare and, as many of the comments above already state, he has acheived so much not just in the college but also in the wider Bury community. I hope that A. Fox and any other governers who support her decision are reflecting upon their actions with the recent stir it has caused.

I would just like to remind Mr O'Hare that he is appreciated and respected by all students, both past and present, and certainly has our support! If indeed he does follow through his decision to leave at the end of this academic year the blackmark on his previously unblemished record should be removed and instead placed on that of the chair, A.Fox. Her conduct, as accuser and executioner must be against regulations, or at the very least against the common sense of humankind!

Mr O'Hare certainly has my support, and that of my family! Let's hope the governing body comes to their senses!

As an ex-student who attended Holy Cross from 1998-2000, I was shocked and saddened to hear the news of Mr. O'Hare's resignation in such terrible circumstances.
This is a man of integrity who has worked hard for many years and now deserves to be retiring from his role in celebration - not under such a cloud of stupidity!
During my two years at college, Mr. O'Hare was always totally approachable, caring and made time for ALL of his students. The college was a wonderful place to be educated - I always felt safe and content, as did my two brothers who attended the college after me - one only leaving in the summer.
Now I am an English teacher myself and would be honoured to work for such a man - there are few headteachers who are as strong and successful, yet simultaneously as caring and considerate as Mr. O'Hare.
Students are given the best deal possible (look at the league tables), staff are given the best deal possible (Holy Cross featured in the Sunday Times top 100 places to work in 2007), all that remains to be asked is, why has the man who has made all of this possible not been given the best deal?
Good luck Mr. O'Hare - I hope you have a wonderful and relaxing retirement - you deserve it!

I hope this woman gets what she deserves. How she could do this to a principal who clearly wants nothing but the best for his college, students and staff, I do not understand. I am an ex-student of the college and have nothing but praise for Mr. O'Hare. It is simply not fair that his time at Holy Cross has ended on bad terms. I wish him all the best for the future.

That is why they are all agreeing with her!! 2 staff members who were on the Board of Governor's have resigned because of her actions. ANNE FOX NEEDS TO RESIGN . Can she not see from the numerous comments on here that people have nothing but good to say of such a great man.

I am a former student of Holy Cross and I have to say I had many dealings with Mike and I always came out feeling positive. He was always there for his students and was happy to spare them his time! He is a great loss to the College. In the modern world that we live in I'm sure we will all be pleased to hear that the Facebook group is already set up calling for Mike's reinstatement and I for one will be joining it. Because with the likes of this person in positions of power it will go the way of so many other establishments run along Politicaly correct organizations. Straight into the ground. I think the treatment of Mike O'Hare is appauling and find the one and only comment on here supporting Anne Fox is an insult to all the staff, the students and the parents of students at Holy Cross. The fact that Holy Cross college is placed eighth nationally in league tables, features in the times best companies to work for and has been judged by OFSTED as outstanding really does speak for itself. Those achievements are due to the dedication and leadership of Mike O'Hare and his ability to motivate and value his staff. At Holy Cross the staff and the students work together and produce great achievements. I am sure in light of this the students, their parents, the staff and the wider community will unite and (if they havent realised already) make the governors realise that they are accountable for their actions and that they are supposed to be acting in the best interests of the college. If the governers do not have the support of staff at the college or the students and their parents, i cannot see how they can remain in position. By remaining in position they are certainly not acting in the best interests of the college. I wish Mike O'Hare the best of luck and pray that the warning he has been given is removed so he can retire with an immaculate record.

Well I work at Holy Cross and let me put you straight on what I see at work every time this women pulls on to the car park (parking anywhere she likes) She speaks to people in a disgracefully manner, if in fact she acknowledge them at all. She is arrogant, ignorant, and rude. Having said this, could this behaviour only apply to us mere mortals?
You on the other hand obviously know the women well.
... I am not a member of the Board of Governors maybe that’s the problem; my credentials’ don’t make the grade...are you?

I was interested to note from your article that it appears Mr O'Hare has had a telling off by his employers and has decided to squeal to the press before he retires. How sad!
If the man has a "beef" with the Governers why didn't he discuss this matter quietly and in a dignified manner and not in such a public way?

From the comments I've read on your website, Mr O'Hare is well thought of and a respected principal who has worked tirelessly for the past 15 years to help build up the college to what it is today. What I'd like to know is who appointed him? How has he been able to build the college to the standard it is today?

The simple answer to these questions is that the Governers appoint and support senior management in the day to day running of the college. They do it without recompense on a voluntary basis, purely for the good of the college! If Mr O'Hare has broken any confidentiality agreements he has to pay the consequences just like you and I would and it does him no credit at all to air his dirty linen in public without the Governers having the right to reply.

I hope for the sake of everyone concerned that this matter is settled soon and no lasting damage is done to the reputation of the college and its standing within the educational community. Please give the Governers the right to respond to this article before condemning them!

As a former student at Holy Cross I, like so many others, offer my support to Mr O'Hare. He seemed such a nice guy round the college campus, popping up seemingly out of nowhere. No wonder gained a bit of a nickname as the SilverFox. But so polite and friendly. It's just such a shame the SilverFox seems to have been driven out by this Ms Fox.

I am, like thousands of others, dismayed and appalled at the treatment of Mr O'Hare. Although Sister Kelly was the Principal when I attended, I remember Mr O'Hare as a key figure and integral to the community at Holy Cross. This is another prime example of the opportunity to undermine the professionalism of the teaching community. It is so sad that Mr O'Hare has to leave in these circumstances. I really do hope that he takes the love and support of the students and staff, both past and present, when he retires in August. Thank you Mr O'Hare for everything you have done.

What a shambles! Mike has been nothing but a dynamic leader of this college for many years now and the governors should be ashamed that this has happened all from their doing! When I was at college there in 1997 Mr O Hare had nothing but positive comments for me and the rest of the college. He has led Holy Cross to where it is today and I very much doubt that it would have happened without his drive and determination. The college has become one success after another and that is what makes the college one of the most popular ones in North West to date.
As a teacher of a feeder school I see many pupils make their choices to go there because it has an excellent principal and the students who are there at the minute will miss out greatly with the loss of Mike. The governors need to get their heads tested for disciplining Mike for communicating with his senior staff, after all that’s what makes a good work force!! If his advice to the governors about a candidate wasn't good enough then whose is??
Ludicrous!!

Mike O’Hare what a joke – herein lies the truth for all you deluded fools! There is nothing more enjoyable than the ignorant displaying their ignorance. In the realms of the ignorant I refer to two players: The Bury Times and the teachers of Holy Cross. When asked for a comment by this publication Mrs. Fox was unavailable for comment – why was this? The thing is,unlike Mike, friend of the teacher, Mrs. Fox was honourable enough to stick to the confidential terms of the process which has led to Mike tendering his resignation. At the end of the day, I suppose we would all like to be like Mike: he is such a nice chap who has personally, without anyone else’s assistance transformed, as he would have us think, Holy Cross from being Holy Chaos; and then from this Olympian height he is able to tell his staff, the press and Uncle Tom Cobbly about how hard done by he is and how that nasty that Mrs. Fox is his “bête noir”. Enough! Mike O’Hare isn’t fit to lace Mrs. Fox’s shoes. This is a woman who has worked quietly, unpaid, behind the scenes years before Mike became Principal to develop Holy Cross to the institution it is today. This is a woman who as acted diligently with outside contractors, financiers, education authorities and most importantly with the respect of the Sisters of The Cross (who have ultimate control over the college) to make the college what it is today - a place where the staff have the opportunity to work in a centre of excellence. She has done nothing but work tirelessly (and teachers please note - without recompense) for the improvement of the college only to suffer at the hands of an poorly deluded man who is trying by means of bluster to cover up his shortcomings and the real reasons for his leaving the college; sadly he has also deluded this paper and the exceptional staff and people he leaves behind. I know that both the staff, and this paper, will be embarrassed when they discover the truth behind his resignation as well as the inaccuracies in this article. I only hope that the true nature behind the written warning which led to Mike’s “victimised” resignation comes to light, (which due to his actions and abuse of the confidences - that he should have respected - must surely come to light) and that these people who are bemoaning his passing and celebrating his legacy will acknowledge their error in replicating the actions of The Bury Times and listening only to one side of a story which does nothing to help the reputation of the college! Unfortunately, I doubt that the truth, if ever written, will have such a splash as the spin that we read in this morning's paper! Hopefully I am wrong!
All of this may be the 'truth' as you say, but it still doesn't solve the problem of why Ms. Fox was allowed to be both accuser and executioner of Mike?
