THE Bury Times has signed a new contract with technology company Comtech M2M to introduce high quality digital signs at newsagents and retail outlets across the region.
The "extra..." display systems will replace traditional newspaper billboards and provide customers with up-to-the-minute headlines and eye-catching advertising.
And the first "extra..." units have been installed at sites in Prestwich and Radcliffe with further units to be rolled out throughout the year.
The move will provide up-to-date news and headlines from the award-winning Bury Times editorial team and will represent a significant new advertising opportunity for local businesses.
This Bury Times deal is part of a wider contract between Comtech M2M and Newsquest newspaper group that will see the introduction of digital signage across the newspaper group's network of more than 300 newspaper titles.
Paula Comerford, newspaper sales manager for the Bury Times Group, said: "We are introducing the extra...' system to bring our newspaper billboards up to date and to provide high quality mobile news, headlines and advertising to our customers.
"The system will also provide local businesses with an attractive new advertising platform in the form of outdoor media that is directly linking from Comtech M2M and is the latest product to be developed by the Bolton-based technology company who have previously worked with organisations such as Camelot/National Lottery, BT Redcare, Nintendo, Kraft and Bombardier Transportation.
Steve Whitehead, marketing director at Comtech M2M, commented: "At a time when newspaper groups are experiencing a shift in advertising spend from print to online, our system offers a valuable new revenue stream for newspapers and local businesses.
"It complements both print and online, allowing newspaper groups to reach new captive audiences at news stands, in newsagents and at convenience stores at the simple click of a button."
