BURY North MP David Chaytor is backing a campaign to save Rochdale Road post office from closure.

He met ward councillors and members of the public at the branch to give his support.

Among the people he met was Marian Moore, aged 84, of Fletcher Street, Bury, who has used the branch for 79 years.

Mr Chaytor joined more than 1,000 residents in adding his name to a petition to save the post office.

He will take the petition to London on behalf of residents, along with a petition calling for Limefield post office to be kept open.

The branches are among five in the borough and 2,500 nationwide set for closure as part of a cost-cutting review.

Mr Chaytor said: “I was pleased to be able to add my name to the petition in the same way that I was able to express my support for keeping open Limefield post office.

“The post office in Rochdale Road is well used — the fact that Mrs Moore has been using the post office for over 70 years demonstrates the importance the branch has for the community.

“In keeping this branch open, the post office would be sending a clear signal to the east Bury community that their custom is valued and recognising that this much used service is to be retained.”

Accountability, Bury says...

I attended the "Save our Post Office" public meeting at the
Jinnah Centre on Sunday 6th July
Unfortunately i was unable to attend when Mr.Chaytor was presented with the petition. However i wrote to one of my local Councilors, Mr Connolly, to ask if he would put forward a question to Mr. Chaytor. As i have not received a reply i feel strongly that it should be brought to people's attention the following about our Parliamentary representative.

If he is 100% behind the public campaign to prevent the closure of Rochdale Road Post Office could he please explain why, on the 19th March 2008, did he vote to reject the motion put forward by the
Conservative Party?
The motion being:

This House -
regrets the proposal to close up to 2,500 post offices;
recognises the vital role post offices play in local communities;
notes the concern and unpopularity amongst the general public of closing such a
large portion of the network;
has concerns that the access criteria laid down for the closures consultation
do not adequately take into account local geographical factors and public
transport networks;
is concerned that the consultation period is only for six weeks rather than
three months, as recommended by Cabinet Office guidelines;
believes that post offices must move with the times in the services they offer
and that options for business expansion and developing business opportunities
with local authorities should be explored further; AND CALLS UPON THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR BUSINESS, ENTERPRISE AND REGULATORY REFORM TO INSTRUCT POST OFFICE LIMITED TO SUSPEND THE COMPULSORY CLOSURE OF SUB-POST OFFICES WHILE THESE ISSUES ARE RE-ASSESSED.

When Keith, the PostMaster of the Rochdale Road Post Office, gave his address to those attending the meeting at the Jinnah Centre on the 6th July, one of
the first comments he made was that he/us had very little time in which to prepare a valid counter arguement to place before Post Office Limited. Indeed this was our one and only opportunity to convince them to reverse thier
decision to close our local Post Office. The privilage of time was sadly not ours. With this in mind and reading the motion above, i believe that by Mr.Chaytor adding his name to the petition he has committed an act of gross duplicity and hypocricy. Mr.Chaytor is an elected representative of the people of Bury North
and as such has a duty of care to those people, when he had the opportunity to
"suspend the compulsary closure of
sub-post offices while these issues are re-assessed" he choose not to. We have
been badly let down by someone in a position to fight to gain us the very thing
we so desperately needed....TIME.

Also the taking to London of the petition by him has somewhat diluted the significance and impact. Where do your loyalties really stand Mr.Chaytor?
