CASTLEBROOK High School pupils got a taste of life in the city when they took part in a stock market challenge.

Year 9 pupils at the school in Parr Lane, Unsworth, were split into teams of imaginary companies and given £100,000 to ‘buy’ shares.

They referred to newspapers and other media reports to identify trends and decide when to buy and sell.

The most successful group had trebled their money to £300,000 by the end of the task.

Neil Swan, head of maths, said: “The students really enjoyed the challenge and worked very well together. We wanted them to apply their maths skills and work as a team, as well as have fun. It was also a chance for them see how maths can be used in the real world.”
