DAVID Chaytor, MP for Bury North, said: “It is beyond belief that Councillor Bob Bibby should be seriously considering pay cuts to some of Bury’s lowest paid employees.

“He has had two years as leader of the council to think through this problem and work out a way of implementing the single status agreement without punishing some of the lowest paid.

“I will be seeking an urgent meeting with Coun Bibby to discuss exactly how he intends to proceed with this and will make it perfectly clear that the current package of pay cuts is unacceptable.

“I will also be meeting with staff representatives to discuss alternative ways of resolving this problem.”

David Chaytor is seeking an urgent meeting with the Council. WHy did he not seek a meeting with Wayne Campbell when Labour did nothing to sort this out in the previos eight years.

The Conservatives have not had two years. They have had majority control since May and have been left clearing up somebody elses mess.

I didn't see Mr Chaytor seeking an audience with Gordon Brown to stop these reviews, change the law or get extra funding for Bury to cover the costs of this Labour invented Debacle.

It goes without saying that he did manage to attend and vote for his own payrise against governemnt wishes

Maybe more people should apply to work for MR Chaytor. His staffing costs have gone up 137% in the last five years. His Additional Costs Allowance has risen by over 100% in five years.

Crocodile Tears from the MP whose Party and Union backers are responsible for all of this.

In the bright march towards our Tory future we now have poorly paid employees receiving savage pay cuts. This follows the introduction of charges for bulky refuse disposal, providing a fly tippers charter, along with less frequent blue bin collections. Now we also have a Tory think tank proposing the end of regeneration grants for the north after their victory in the next general election, which will impoverish us all.
As a crucial swing constituency in the next election why do so many bury people consider voting for these people and can the rest of us club together to send them down south?

Cato,

This is typical nonsense served up by the papers who are trying to get a slant on a report to sell papers.

I assume you haven't read the report.

As to Blue bins, I never fill mine up in a month so why should we waste money on fornightly collections. Remember that Central governement is starving Local Councils of funding so cuts have to be made somewhere or the Council Tax will go up by more than inflation, as it regularly did under the last administration

If Bury Council, like so many others, had not spent the last decade creating so many highly-paid non-jobs then those who do a good job for poor pay could be much better rewarded.
David Chaytor, his government and his local government colleagues are entirely to blame for this shambles and his attempt to shift the blame to Bob Bibby is as laughable as it is despicable.

Blue bins and bulky waste get a grip this article is about a serious matter, not a load of political non starters, forget tory and labour. The employees that are being shafted have worked for both. The council employess are not that bothered about politics, leave this nonsense to the Councillors. Council employees a call for action is required, not strikes its 2008, disruption is required

Psychicgary, you've got a big chip on your shoulder. This so called evaluation, which should really be called a devaluation, has hit loads of hard working people. Do you think you could do some of the jobs that have been affected? For example, could you run the highly complex IT systems that keep the wheels turning? You may also like to know that the lower the wage, the bigger the cut has been. Some people will be on well below the minimum wage. It's not our fault that the Lowry had to be sold. Someone has got to pay for the free trips to China that the bigwigs go on! Someone has got to pay the price for keeping them on higher payscales! Remember, there are still highly paid people running around on £45,00 or more to whom all of this is "water off a duck's back!"

I'm sorry, I have just noticed I missed a nought of off my previous comments - there are people running around on £45,000 or more (rumoured to be increased by 6%) to whom our problems are, as I said before, "water off a duck's back!"

considering this is a labour government directive and it is forced on the council, i find chayters comment rich. particularly because he has never been an outspoken critic of his own party. wonder if he will be calling a meeting with gordon brown

What a Joke! Does Chaytor think we will be taken in by this? Where has he been for the last 8 years? All this came about because of pushing by greedy Trades Unions who thought that they would get a huge pay rise (paid for by the Tax payer) for all their members. Now it's not turned out that way Chaytor tries to blame the Tories. Well we are not all as daft as he thinks we are.

As a council employee about to take a severe cut in pay, I'm naturally disappointed. But not because local authority wage costs have to be cut (which I agree with) but because the highest paid are receiving pay rises while the lowest paid take cuts to fund those rises. Most readers won't be aware that the bosses, charged with the 'difficult' task of slashing pay for others, have been exempted from the pay review. That's why I'm angry!
