THE great British public ‘pud’ their hands in their pocket again to raise a record total in the name of Pudsey on Friday night.
The ‘on the night’ total for BBC Children In Need was £20,991,216 — of which the North West contributed £1,707,550.
And the public of Bury certainly played its part with a variety of events around the borough.
Local bakers Sayers also handed three Pudsey cakes to the Bury Times which we handed out to Millwood Primary in Bury, Elms Bank Specialist Arts College in Whitefield, and Radcliffe Riverside.
BURY FC youth players joined staff at Asda on Spring Street in Bury to raise more than £200 with a sponsored bike ride on an exercise machine supplied by Fitness First gym.
Pudsey Bear and Bury FC mascot, Robbie the Bobby, entertained the children and there was a tombola.
Asda staff member, Karen Boswell, said: “We had lots of people in the store and everyone loved it. It went on all day and the football players really enjoyed it.”
PUPILS at Unsworth Primary School and volunteers certainly gave it load of ‘welly’ to help raise £245.
The ‘walking bus’ children staged a successful welly walk sporting an assortment of colourful footwear, and a Match the Pudsey competition.
Fundraising organiser, Mrs Marianne Thurm said: “We were all very proud of ourselves for doing something different to raise money for such an important cause.”
STAFF and clients at CoCo Hair and Beauty, in The Rock, Bury, raised £500 by holding a raffle with a range of prizes and donated £2 from the cost of every treatment to the charity.
CARING pupils at Radcliffe Riverside High School dug deep to raise £402.
The school held a non-uniform day and asked pupils to make donations to the appeal.
Three enterprising students — Zoe Jones, Kirsty Morris and Maxine Crawford — raised £44 by selling jewellery they had made.
There was also a cake sale and a raffle with the star prize a Pudsey Bear cake, donated by Sayers.
Colin Jones, chairman of the school’s governors, won the raffle but asked for it to be re-drawn.
The eventual winner was Year 11 pupil Nicole Uren.
ATHLETIC youngster Andrew Bonnar put on his running shoes and raised £525.
The 11-year-old ran ten miles on Sunday from the children’s ward at the Royal Bolton Hospital to Fairfield General Hospital.
Andrew, of Thoresby Close, Radcliffe, completed the run in one hour and 54 minutes.
PUDSEY Bear was the guest of honour at a Hawaiian party at Mary Kelly’s Rascals nursery in Ainsworth Road, Radcliffe. The event raised £76.06.
A FOOTBALL-mad fundraiser scored a goal for Children In Need when he was joined by a star-studded line up on the pitch.
Ex-Prestwich Heys player Graeme Warner, aged 49, took part in a penalty shoot out at Oldham Athletic Football Ground with former Scotland goalkeeper Greg Fleming and former Wales stopper Mark Crossley, who both now play for Oldham.
Graeme, who was also joined by Dieter Clausnitzer, his colleague from Manchester-based Manson Insurance, raised £2,000.
YOUNGSTERS from Prestwich Prepatory School, in Bury Old Road, had a visit from a star of the movies Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Children aged up to four sat in the old-fashioned racing car, which was made famous from the 1968 film about its adventures.
STAFF and students from Elms Bank Specialist Arts College in Whitefield spent the day out of ‘uniform’ and indulging their sweet tooth, thanks to a special Pudsey cake donated by Sayers.
Headteacher Elaine Parkinson said: “The cake was beautiful and very delicious too. We were able to use to raise funds by raffling it off to staff. The winner was Joanne McCorkell.
“We also had a non-uniform day, which children and staff enjoyed very much. All in all, the school raised £196.”
AT its sessions at the Longfield Suite on Friday and St Andrew’s Church, Prestwich, on Monday, the Jo Jingles pre-school group sold copies of sing-along track I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing, with all proceeds going to Children In Need.
BURY Lions Club raised £1,634 during a collection in the Mill Gate centre, which also provided some ‘animal magic’ for the youngsters in the shape of Pudsey bear and the Lions’ mascot, Clarence the lion.
PUPILS at Radcliffe Hall Primary School wore brightly coloured wigs as part of a crazy hair day and tackled a range of fundraising activities to raise a total of £438 for Children in Need.
Deputy headteacher Steven Ollis agreed to have his head shaved if the children raised £200. After reaching their target, pupils watched Mr Ollis go under the clippers, expertly handled by teacher Kathryn Davies. Ten-year-old pupil Hayley Ashton added the finishing touches after raising the most money with a sponsored silence.
