Golden couple look to the future

HAPPY couple Frank and Kathleen Shakeshaft celebrated 50 years of marriage with a dream holiday.

The golden couple from Melrose Road, Radcliffe, have just returned from a Mediterranean cruise, which they booked to mark half a century of wedlock.

Frank, aged 69, and Kathleen, aged 67, were married at St Gregory’s Church in Farnworth on June 13, 1959.

Mr Shakeshaft, who worked as a plasterer, said the secret of a lasting marriage was listening to each other and pulling together.

He added: “Love is not looking into one and other’s eyes, but looking in the same direction towards the future.”

The couple met in the Nevada roller skating rink, Bolton in 1958.

Mrs Shakeshaft, a former mill worker, said: “I knew straight away that I wanted to be Frank’s girl.”

For their first date they went to the Bolton Palais, in St. George’s Road, for a night of rock and roll.

The pair have three children, Rose-Marie, aged 49, Joseph, aged 46, Diane, aged 44, and two grandchildren.

Their first great-grandchild is due at the end of July.
